Anyone else watch this auction? They're a really cool set of drums, but I'm surprised at the closing price nonetheless:
Wow! Stencil kit values on the rise?
1982 Ludwig Classic in white Cortex, 24-13-14-18 + Coliseum snare
For quieter gigs:
Early '70s Whitehall Tiger Eye Pearl 20-12-14-14
Neglected but thinking about:
Early '70s Sonor Champions in Rosewood, 22-12-13-16
This is what is known as "stupid money".
For posterity's sake: $431.99
I like the Gretsch copy lugs......
Just try that today!
Dead dogs like rusty fire hydrants!!!
Fred Gretsch would come knocking on your door too...........
The saddest thing of it to me is that Teisco/Del Rey used the cheapest, dryest, thinnest luan of all the stencil makers. When you see a stencil snare caved in from lug tension it's almost always one of these. Pearl and Star were using re-rings when this company left them off and then later on the timeline Pearl and Star went to thicker shells but not these guys. So before buying this set I would have really wanted some interior pics.
Think about what drums you could buy with a careful 430$.....

What does stencil drums mean. Sorry, I am a noob to this stuff so pardon me. I got a good deal on CL for a cherry finish Recording Custom kit for 400.00 and an immaculate 1966 Ludwig kit for 200.00. My luck for lottery stuff I am sure is long gone.
Yamaha Cherry Wood Recording Custom 1987/2005 8/10/12/13/14/16/22
Ludwig Black Diamond Pearl 1966 5x14 S.S./13/16/22
Gretsch wood finish 1959 5x14/13/16/22
Slingerland Radio King Capri Pearl 5x14 Radio King
Gretsch Silver Sparkle Catalina Club Bop 2008 18/14/12/10/5x14
Gretsch Silver Sparkle/Black Stripe Catalina Club Mod kit 22/10/12/16
The term stencil relates to the drums all being very similar. The primary difference between them was simply the name or badge.
Seller says "The chrome on most is a bit dirty and will clean up"... really? I've never been able to get cheap old pitting chrome to look very good. This is sort of like drinking coffee while drunk. The result is a wide awake drunk!
When you clean pitted chrome you end up with clean pitted chrome.

Bunch o snares
There really was in difference in the chrome at some points.
My Star's have a chrome which quality is really very close to the fabulous Premier chrome of that time (late 60s/ early 70s). It shines very close to 'brand new'.
Perhaps you (auto.pilot) haven't come across one of those quality drumsets until now. But you're right, too: many 'stencil' kits are made with cheap hardware which hasn't stand the centuries.
