Worthy Project? - Big Beat Set?

Wise VDF community, I seek your wisdom on my questions below. I picked these drums up from a gent who said he was given them by a widow and they had sat in a basement which flooded. The set is complete with all hardware! The only thing missing appears to be one B&O badge.

- Any insight as to exactly what set this is?

- Is this a worthy project, in your opinion? From a financial standpoint and from a collectible standpoint?

- As you can see, the exterior of the shells are pretty nice. The interior seems to have the water damage, but do not appear to be warped or out of round. What do you recommend to do with the interior of the shells?

- Seeing the pics, any other recommendations?

Not too bad shape considering. IMHO

I would recommend first taking off all the hardware and a wipe-down the shells (inside and outside) with a 5% bleach solution in water to kill off any mold. From there you will get a better idea of the condition of the shell if there is any de-lamination of the interior and coatings. If there is any issues I would lightly sand the interior of the shells then re lacquer the insides with a clear coat. With all of the hardware and hoops off you can clean and polish them using a chrome cleaner. A good buffing of the exteriors with Novus 2 & 1 followed by a nice wax and you should be good to go. The pedal will clean up without any issues on a buffing wheel or with Mothers Mag Polish. Looking forward to some pics when you done.

Looks like a maple cortex 6-ply kit from about 1980. Are the spurs on the same side as the badge on the kick drum?

I believe the badge was moved from the reso side to the batter side when modular hardware was introduced around 1981.

Sorry for the delay! I'm attaching additional pictures to assist.

The sizes are:

Bass - 22"

FT - 16"

RT1 - 12"

RT2 - 13"

The bass drum spurs are on the OPPOSITE SIDE of the badge.

Any assistance with identification of this set is appreciated, and your thoughts on the question as to whether or not this is a "worthy" project are appreciated. Thanks, my VDF brethren!

If you have time it is worthwhile but then again I like to save drums.

The inside would be the hardest part.

I used a vibrating tumbler recently and worked great on the hardware.

Plus the suggestion above.

DRUMR69 - I've never used a tumbler, but I do use an ultrasonic. Have you used an ultrasonic? How does it compare to a tumbler? Do you have a strong preference or recommendation for getting a tumbler?

i'm not D69, but i have both and find the ultrasonic is best for rust removal using Evaporust or CLR (vinegar works, but takes WAY too long)

following up with a tumbler and a shot of NuFinish car polish in walnut shells lets you remove any burrs left from de-rusting, and does a full 3D polishing job INSIDE the lugs and threads and leaves a thin coating of polish

using a vibratory to remove rust works, but can subject your chrome to excessive wear... especially if they're heavily rusted
