Why so many of us like the Acrolite snare drums

Maybe many of us love the Acrolite because it sounds more like a wood shell snare drum than like every other "ringy" metal shell snare drum sounds? I'm a wood shell snare drum guy. My two metal shell snare drums are a brass Rogers Powertone and a Black "Galaxie"Ludwig Acrolite. The Acrolite is the better sounding of the two drums to me. But, neither of them are in my top three. #1. Tie between my two wood shell Leedy Shelly Manne 5x14; #2. My 4x13 wood shell Radio King; #3. My wood shell 5x14 Camco Tuxedo.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

I love my Acrolite! Spun, seamless, beaded shell. Flanged bearing edges...What's not to love? You just don't see many snare drums that have so many cool features in any price point...and certainly none at the Acrolite's price point. You can't hurt an Acrolite. You don't worry about an Acrolite on a gig in a dive bar. The Supra gets all the praise (and deserves it, too), but the Acrolite is the "plain-looking" cousin to the Supra and can do everything it can do, sonically-speaking....maybe the Acro is a little drier sounding....but closer to the Supra than many other drums out there.

My favorite snare drum is my 1964 gold sparkle Pioneer -still with the original heads! I don't know what it is about all the fancier drums out there....Some of them look great, but whenever I play them, they sound too severe. Give me the simple snare drums! Give me the Acros and the Pioneers. You can have the rest! ;)

acrolights and clubdates will always remind me of 1968 around 6th grade maybe 4th grade. I thought one leaves the student set. Today the sound could be "there" but I can't take the way they look. They're beginners level- I know I know- but that's what got ingrained.

didn't even "rate" a hi-hat.. "I know I know"..just "forever student" to me.

It's very versatile. It's probably not for every single environment, but it can sure cover a lot of ground. Tune it up, medium, or down, and it'll ring, cut, or splat. It records really well. It's a true chameleon and, I like to think, a "happy accident" in manufacture by Ludwig.

Beginner's level has happened over and over to me my whole drumming life. I'd do some gigging and recording and I'd think I was an expert. Then I'd see Tony Williams or Elvin Jones....I'm suddenly a beginner again. I play for awhile longer, start feeling good....then I see Horacio Hernandez...beginner again. So, I don't mind if a drum set was designed with the beginning drummer in mind. :)

Thank you. You will notice that they are all very simple, uncomplicated snare drums even though the Shelly Manne snare drums have a fancy-schmancy snare strand mounting set-up.

My Acrolite sounds very wood-like to me perhaps because it has that heavy black sparkly paint job and I prefer to keep the tension of the heads very tight.

Acrolites are super versatile which is what I love about them, but I think they really shine when they're dry and crispy and cracking....

...Which is exactly where I like my snare. So when I go traveling the Acro is my go-to. And it's also my least valuable snare so I'm not afraid of bringing it around! If something happens, it sucks but they grow on trees, I can get another! Acros are fantastic!

I bought an Acrolite after speaking with Kenny Aronoff, who told me he used one for most of Mellencamp's Scarecrow record. I loved the drum sounds on the album, so it was natural decision to get an Acro.
