Why so cheap?

Loading...

I've been looking around at prices and notice that 18 20 and 22" vinatge zildjian A's are going for next to nothing, tons of them under $100 with free shipping? these are some of the nicest sounding cymbals, why so cheap?

ive noticed this too,for the last couple months especially. average prices on common vintage avedis zildjians are down considerably. the more sought after ones are still holding value pretty well. its a nice time to be buying if possible..

I recently sold a few nice rides for 75 bucks each. a year ago I wouldn't have budged on 150 each for any of them..

A few years back,I put up two 22" A.Zils...and one went for $55...the other $65!

I started them at $0.01...and let them ride...

I quit doing eBay for quite a while after that...had to rethink on how to do it..

Finally came up with...list them for what I have into them...plus 13% for Paypal/eBay fees...

Then,if they didn't sell,I could relist at same price,or start dropping the price $5-10 or more every time..and KNOW I was losing money...but at least have some control over my loses....

Thats how I still do it...works for me....

They are plentiful. Supply is greater than demand.

They are quite variable so without a well produced sound file the buyer is taking a chance. Buyers are likely to factor this in to the price they will pay.

Trans stamps have been doing ok, but the rest of the A Zildjian eras languish.

Prices have been down for some years in the drum/cymbal area except for the best stuff. Top quality and rare stuff has retained its value.

As was said, once you get onto the '70s the vintage market starts to get soft for A's, but if you are diligent you can still pick up some great sounding '50s and '60s A rides for between around $75 to $$175. I found a couple of '50s large stamp 20" A's at Sam Ash in New Jersey for not much more than $125. I also found a 20" 50's trans stamp for $149. All were mediums weighing a bit over 2000 grams, and all sound very good. Sixties A's generally go for less than '50s A's. Vintage A's in general are inexpensive when compared to vintage Istanbul K's.

I bought a number of vintage Avedis last year. Paid $81 shipped for an 18" (70's thin stamp), as well as several 60's and 70's 20" pies, the heaviest being at 2180g. The others were between 1900-1950g. The most I paid was about $125 shipped. The lowest was $102.50 shipped.

Big swings in the market right now. Might be less people willing to pull the trigger right now with Christmas coming up. I don't usually buy cymbals for other people.

Fifties A's are more but great deals can still be had if you look around.

I wrote to a seller not long ago who was obviously not a drummer. He had a set of hats listed as "no name vintage" cymbals. It was a little over a day until the end of the auction, so I wrote to him asking for more information. I think he assumed they were no name due to lack of ink. After questioning him for close up pictures, he discovered the engraved stamp and researched that they were 50's Avedis hi hats. (No, I didn't didn't help him with that at all.) Since there was no starting bid, he immediately bumped the starting price from $50 to something like $249.95.

If my memory serves me, he never actually got more than $200 for them after relisting several times.
