why is there such hoopla about Ludwig Speed Kings?

Loading...

o.k. ,I give. what is it with these Ludwig Speed Kings? I've had 3 of them---one I recently sold to a neurotic constant noodler who would not use any other pedal---(he broke the cast bridge of his old pedal------how do you do that?)-----=so I have a used one that I acquired, left and the one I bought upon recommendation in 1967, brand new and played for about 3 1/2 years or until I wisened up and got into pedals that were not designed by sadists. Since then, I have played Slingerland(several models),Ludwig SpeedMaster(an older Ludwig pedal, that I like better),Sonor(several models),Trixon(several models),Premier, Basix,Tromsa(several models), Ghost(the second one), some odd Japanese pedals,Pearl and a few others I have forgotten. With the exception of some of that odd Japanese stuff----the vaunted Ludwig Speed King ---even brand new is the worst pedal I have ever played. Now , before anybody out there who went into R.E.M.'s during the appearance of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan starts screaming sacrilege; Ringo wasn't playing one of those. He was playing another pedal. So, now that , that is clear(Ringo, also chose his Ludwigs due to their colour, not their quality) why would anyone play these things or pay over 100.00 on ebay for such misengineered garbage? The rivet in the heel becomes loose, the joints in all the connecting metal on metal unions wear and become loose, the angle of the footboard is specifically designed for exhibition waterskiers, that have had anklebone fusion, and the threads in the aluminum spring columns strip. The only good thing about the pedal is that it has ball bearings.Seems to me , a few other pedals have bearings as well but they don't rely on surplus parts from a combine to activate the beater.

Lol... I have a lot of other pedals too.. I like My Modern ludwig Pro's very well. The Tama IC is OK, but I feel a little to heavy feeling. I've got a Sonor Champion, and I used to have Gibraltars... I also own the dreaded SK... Bottom line is, it has a feather light feel to me, and when played heel down, the heal is USEFUL!! to control the beater.. No dead heel plate on that thing. Having 2 70's ones and one modern one... I'd really like to see a "Model 2" version of it that addresses the wear out issues you've mentioned.

There's lots of guys who hot-rod the SK's on the aftermarket, and fix those design biffs. The spring /cam design is dynamite... the concept is super, the execution is mediocre.

Soap BoxBecause only non-American, pinko, commies would espouse such sugar on this patriotic and thunder fearing forum.Funny Post

I grew up playing a Speed King from age 6-16 - never had a problem or knew other pedals existed- I have never played one since.

I do love the Universal Speed Master these days thoughExcited

My Favorite Vintage pedal is the original floor toe pedal. The SpeedMaster, God I love that pedal... For Double Pedals I like the Yamaha Direct Drive 9415x Flying Dragon, 10 times better and faster than a DW9000 with more power and yet more finesse.Bowing

Well, we`re a group of friends so it ain`t no big thing. We all know the Speed King is about 100,000 drummers absolute favorite pedal of all time. I did find it informative that it has design and wear problems- I`ve already learned something from this post. (just a note - the one I played for ten years daily- never seemed to age a day- just went on and on and on- probably still out there in the cosmos keeping time like a clock)Chewie:

Nice to have a choice, right? I like Speed King pedals. If they're adjusted right, they are incredible. If they aren't, not as much.

Look at it this way. They're one of the few pedals that utilizes a compression spring design instead of the usual stretch spring.

What type of bass pedal did Ringo use on Ed Sullivan, anyway? What about in the studio? Inquiring minds want to know..
