Why do we hate concert toms?

I had concerts in the 70s, loved em. I started off with the Pearl Full Dimension set up; https://www.pearldrummersforum.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=439440&stc=1&d=1354542791

Mine was in White, then I started adding the smaller ones, 6", 8", 10", 12" so eventually I had the whole set of 8 concerts.

After some time I eventually ended up with just 5 concerts,8",10",12",14",16" wrapped in plastic bags (for protection) inside one another, they were fitted in a Kick drum an a F/t case The cases each had a sheet of wood, screwed to the bottom with rubber castors. So I would turn up at a gig, and it was "pack n roll all the way", whilst my mates were struggling with their heavy amps!.. Happy days...

Ha! That might be the best use of concert toms I've ever heard of.

I started with a Maxwin 4 pc. kit in 1975 and as time went on, i added 8 & 10 concert toms and a little later a 14 & 15 and i thought that i was the hippest guy in town. That lasted a few wks and then my drum teacher made me realize that all i really needed to learn properly was 4 pcs only..... So i ditched the concert toms and it turned out that he was right....Funny how life is sometimes.

Keep fixing them up...

Hi Parcel...and Welcome to the forum! Excellent info on how you transported your concert toms. Now, I just have to ask: how in the world did you come upon this "concert tom" thread when the last entry was 5-14-2013?!! LoLoLoLo

Personally, I like the sound of concert toms providing they have the right heads...My Ludwig stainless concert toms sound incredible with clear emperors on them...

Newest concert tom come back courtesy of Graham Broad in the Roger Waters band for the US and THEM tour. He has what looks to be big Gretsch concert toms...

I have a 5-piece kit of Ludwig Combo's in butcher block. They came with the tom's without resonant heads, lugs, etc and the metal strip across the bottoms. I put Evan's oil filled heads on them and they actually sound pretty nice. I tuned them pretty tight for a little higher pitch and with the oil filled heads the resonance is ok so they sound pretty good.

No Guru - I just love collecting & learning about vintage drums!

I live the sound of the stainless kit I had that Octa was huge in sound

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
