Who made Slingerland heads? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Loading...

I was wondering who made Sling heads, I have them on this white set I bought, they appear to be original (which tells me this set was not played much) the heads sound decent, they look like the remo power dot. I cant tell if they are 1 or 2 ply. I was considering replacing all the heads, but now may just try just replacing the bottom heads with new ones, and seeing how that effects the sound. maybe I can get away playing a few gigs with these sling heads. here is a pic, oh by the way they have the same heads on the bottom they say "slingerland batter heads" inscribed on them

They made their own and even got in a legal battle with Ludwig over patent rights in the early 60's.

Never play it the same way once.

Yep. It went to the extent to "The Chief" going to the Slingerland headquarters to make sure there was no patent infringement...

Ahh...but not all Slingerland heads were made by Slingerland. Only the ones with the same "power lock collar" design as Ludwig were made in house by Slingerland. The later "glued" heads were made for them by Remo. Strangely, after Slingerland won the court battle over the rights to make the heads (which were blatant patent and copyright rip-offs of the Ludwig heads) they stopped making them and started buying heads from Remo with the Slingerland name on them......

"Strangely, after Slingerland won the court battle over the rights to make the heads"

Just as with partisan politics, Luddy huggers will spin the story one way While Slingy savants will spin it the other way. What remains as fact is the decision of the court.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

For the record, Ludwig was producing their head several years BEFORE Slingerland started producing their version. Ludwig lost the case on a technicality over "prior art" on their patent. The Slingerland attourneys cited prior art from a patent pertaining to the method that retained the mylar in the hoops...stating that Ludwig got the idea from a pullman car screen patent from 1888. The court decided in Slingerland's favor due to that, not anything to actually do with the heads themselves. Slingerland blatantly ripped off Ludwig and GOT AWAY WITH IT FOR YEARS. Then they oddly decided to outsource heads again....
