From SlingerLynn

Someone had a miniature of a Buddy Rich 70s Slingerland kit (with stands pedals and canister throne!!!) on feeBay recently that was awesome. Was that your handiwork, DaddyNowhere?Lynn

If it was the one with the pack of cigarettes on the floor tom, that was a local guy from Portland. I saw that mini kit, in person, and it's quite impressive! He also had a Bonham kit and a Beatles kit. Very well made!

Happy you like my little Ringo kit. Think I actually made it about 18, or 20 years ago now that I think about it. My original plan was to build an entire scale model of the Beatles 1st Sullivan appearance to fit inside an old, 60s period, gutted TV cabinet. Idea hit a bump in the road when I was dealing with the figures. A little to large to hold together with plasticine, (even with wire endoskeleton, the plasticine cracked at stress points. Bought four Justin Timberlake dolls, (on special at Zellers) and had planned to pull all four of his heads off and replace them with plasticine Beatle heads. Darn dolls were like marionettes, and had no support, so while I had my girlfriend try to sew the little Beatle suits, I tried to figure out how to support these dolls, and eventually I lost interest, or got busy, or something like that there - Oh yeah, I never found the right TV cabinet either. Did manage to build the vox amps, (with coat hanger wire frames) the Hofner bass, and John's Rickenbacker, though I never got to George's Country Gentleman. Still like to go back to it sometime - man, I can't believe how long ago that was. Took a lot of time to do as well, not like a model kit - everything had to be manufactured from scratch. Definitely would not be profitable to make for sale... especially since MacFarland and all his rock and roll toys. Wish they had those when I was a kid - in fact this whole thing started after I made instruments for my Big Jims when I WAS a kid, and when I got too old to play with dolls, I painted their faces, built some Marshall stacks, and turned them into KISS. Got pictures of all of that buried somewhere - took me long enough to dig up these.

I've seen one other guy since I made this, that made miniature kits, (not sure if it's the guy you'd mentioned) which are really nicely detailed, though most of them, if not all are a larger scale.

Actually, I have been toying with the idea of doing a new Ringo kit, maybe slightly larger, with a bit more detail. I actually made this from photos, and I don't think I'd even seen a vintage Ludwig kit up close at that time. I now have 4 of my own. One thing I could really use however; (looking for some help from my fellow forum members here) I've been looking for a clear image of a sheet, or large, 'flat', section of black oyster pearl wrap that I could scale and print to actually wrap the shells with. Could use Blue oyster pearl, and sky blue pearl also, those are my kit colors. If anyone here has any good pictures, or can direct me to somewhere, even here on VDF where I can find some, I'll be sure to post the results if I can manage to find the time to do it. Oh, and sorry to the OP - didn't mean to hijack the thread.

Oh - now I remember! The Justin Timberlakes were a larger scale than the instruments I'd made, so I would have had to remake all the gear from scratch, and the amount of time it would have taken was just not practical. Now a single kit however...

Really cool Ringo and kit. Amazing detail must take a LOT of patience. The whole Fab Four in a old period TV is a cool idea. Very creative talent you have! Didn't they have those big head Beatle figures (dolls) back in the 60's? I was a little kid then and had a ton of that stuff. You should have seen my Beatle wig LOL.

As I was reading the thread, I didn't think anything could beat the suitcase rig (so cool), but mini-ringo wins I guess.Yes, it's a 20,12,14 Ludwig, same size as yours. I tried to find out more about 70s Ludwig "tesco" cymbals. From what I can tell, I believe they eventually became Sabian, but Tesco was an umbrella company that just bought cymbals from makes all over Italy and put various brands on them. So your quality could be anything from hand made to machine made. Personally, I think this cymbal is UNREAL acoustically. I am not knowledgable enough to say if it has hand hammered etc, but it doesn't have a perfect pattern to it, there are some nuances.

I think that is a Tosco,si? Tosco was a legitimate factory, owned by a couple of the UFIP, execs, that made really good hand hammered cymbals for about 10-12 years , then were bought by Sabian. Sabian continued in production , with some quite good cymbals but eventually ,they closed the factory and transferred production to New Brunswick. Tosco made very good cymbals for Sonor and some under their own brand. I am not sure about the level of quality of the Ludwigs but it sounds like ,they are o.k.,from your account. Oddly, there are Tosco cymbals ,made in Canada and Sabian cymbals, made in Italy.

My Premier Artist Heritage Club Kit (Uk made generation) has a tiny footprint, sounds rich, & I much prefer this kick size (20" x 8") to floortom sized bop kicks. More bottom, less volume. I use an older double tom mount now (not pictured) so that i can mount a ride off of the kick. It all fits in my trunk!
