I am on my way to being just a collector. My back isn't allowing me to do the things I used to be able to do(i.e. moving equipment around).

If there was an "in between" these two choices, I would have chosen it.

Funny how we have different standards for "player". Imagine what the piano players that are nice elderly women would say if they were told they don't really "play" their instrument of choice because they're not in some garage band...

Gary you're on the mark. I know people who only play at their house, practice space that don't play out at all. But are excellent drummers .Then on the other side of the coin People that play out in bands that are horrible, can't tune their drums, adjusted all wrong drums, hardware etc, and get paid to torture the audience with they tripe they're playing.

Oh just got up from playing last night until 2 am out of town 9.44 am it is now. With two broken ribs. luckily the bass player and guitar player and vocals/harmonica took pity on me helping tote in my kit. I had a good wreck on my mountain bike two weeks ago. the ground is still hard !!

Jeff thanks buddy, I had to remove the 16 floor tom it kills me to bend/ turn that far yet. just used my 14" floor tom.

Hats off to the valued resident collectors here. From stamps to old farm tools, most everything you can think of is collected....vintage drums and sets being the coolest things on Earth, doesn't surprise me they'd be collected too. :)You're preserving these treasures for the next generation. As collections slowly get broken up and sold to both players and other collectors, eventually most kits will end up being played no worries. Collectors stretch the lifespan of these kits well beyond if they were all in use right now - not everyone takes great care of their equipment.So Cheers to the collectors, and though I'm not the one to say it, don't let anyone ever make you feel unwelcome or "less than" on this awesome forum.Mitch

I don't have the disposal income to be a collector!

That being said, I'd call myself a player. Next gig is not for another 6 or 7 weeks but we're writing new material and hitting the studio to record before then. Not to mention I'm away for 4 weeks in the middle of all that. I drag the '47 Radio Kings out to the rehearsal studio every week and if this next gig wasn't a festival with a (really nice) supplied backline then I'd definitely be taking the Slingy's to that.

Sorry i haven`t added my vote to this poll. I`m a professional drummer and i have been for 45 yrs. A professional drummer is one who makes his living with the drums and not really how often they play per mos. so i felt the poll seemed somewhat unfair to me.I`ve played more in my younger days than i do now but i still play for a living four times a mos.So in the poll standards,i guess that would make me a semi-pro...Anyone else here have some thoughts on what`s considered a full time professional?Best, Wayne

Eh what? Your a pro? Awesome. Your not a home drummer. It's ok you can tick the box. And by the way I'm a Pro too, and I have been for 25 years. The question is not an affront to pro's, it's a riff on Rims idea of gauging a simple percentage breakdown of players and collectors.

On reflection, we could do an uber poll breaking down an array of relationships we have with drums and drumming. Beginner, semi pro, pro, pro who has someone else set the drums up, weekend warrior, rehearsal, retired. Collector, fiend. Maybe we should do that.
