I took a picture of my little Whitehall kit at a patio bar gig yesterday. It's a six-ply kit in Tiger's Eye wrap. 20" kick, 12" rack, and 14" floor tom. I often play it with brushes or Hot Rods, and when I do I bring along a little Pearl maple 3"x13" snare in an orange stain that doesn't look half bad with it.
I love this kit and have used it for rock and funk gigs as well as coffee-house acoustic sets. The wrap's in great shape and the hardware's shiny with no pitting or rust. I'm missing a hoop but at least have an original one for the reso side. Speaking of the reso side, that's what gets the most comments on this kit. That bit of decoration began life as a framed bit of embroidery. My wife hated it and wouldn't let me hang it on the wall at home. One day I was looking at it and thought, "you know, that's about the same size as the kick drum ..."
It changes the sound for sure but since I use this kit for quieter gigs now it's not bad at all. I get a bump instead of a boom from the kick.
