Im no authority on the MIJ's but on here there are experts. Those hoops look pearl and so do lugs but its only because ive had a star snare drum and it is different. I would say 60's. But it looks great and i bet it sounds bloody great too. Nice snare drum.....sean
Looks to me like a MIJ 60s-era Slingerland stencil made by Star (pre-Tama) with stick-saver style hoops. It likely had one of the many different badges listed here.
Notice the identical lugs in the pics of my Lyra (Star brand) snare for reference.
Thank you all for response.
Any other guesses?
Star perhaps.
Posted these pics for the MIJ experts to see the strainer.
And there is a sticker on the drum. Probably the shop sticker.
Agreed Star...
Slingerland styling... First kit I owned was inclusive of this model snare... Mine was badged "Jason".
This snare looks in very top condition ...
Cheers
John
I have a full set, same color & style, of stencil drums. The snare is identical to this. Mine have (not 2 but) 3 re-rings. Mine are branded 'Kingston.' An interesting point: on most stencil drums, from the 60's, it is noted "Made in Japan" on the name badge. On my Kingston kit there is no reference to point of origin on the badges. MarkE
Hi!
thank you for your responses.
this snare became my working snare. First, it appeared to be somehow dead, but when I replaced snare wires (22 instead of 16 wires) it became instantly more responsive. I particularly like its response while hitting it hard, it has some kind of natural compression. Also, you don't necessarily need to hit center in order to get a good tone.
All in all, good snare for budget money, but it requires an effort to get best out of it.
