Which Ludwig Shells are these?

Loading...

As far as I can tell these are 1982-1983 (ish) Ludwigs. Does that seem right?

The snare is obviously a later "Rocker", but the three red drums have rounded corner B/O badges. Do you guys think these are the 4 ply "Select North American Hardwood" shells or the earlier 6 ply/no ring shells?

I know the pics are bad, but it looks to be red cortex or red silk.

I can pick these up for a good price. Obviously they are trashed and will be a fixer upper....but I like that kind of thing. I guess the thing I am curious about is if the shells are garbage or not. Are they worth saving? Can anyone tell just by looking at these pictures? Insides look clear. Can't really tell if its maple though. The spurs are the 1/2" retracting variety...modular hardware...big black wing nuts on everything. Seems heavy duty enough to be the real shells.

Anyway....any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

I am not totally sure but I think those are about the year you think they are,I have an S/L series 5 1983,it has 4 ply toms and 6 ply bass,I think yours should be 6 ply,I think it was later when ludwig went to 4 ply classics and 6 ply super classics. The six ply kick I have is really strong.

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob

Well I picked this kit up.

As far as I can tell they are 6 ply shells and all three of them are in good shape. No extra holes or anything. Bottom edges are good even though the hoops are missing. Missing 1/2" spur as well.

The finish is pretty wrecked....the seams have the grommets on them and are kind of pulling apart....typical. There are cracks in the finish kind of all over the place. Not horrible, but I think I am gonna peel this garbage off and do a re-wrap on the three real Ludwig drums. The badges are all there and in the 3,xxx,xxx range.

The snare that came with is a "Rocker II"...has the weird brown speckled paint inside. Wood shell with a chrome wrap. Kind of nice shape actually. Has the p-83 strainer which I thought was kinda weird. Black and White badge in the 6,xxx,xxx range and the older rubber ended snare wires.

Anyway...

There you have it!
