which heads for my Yamaha set

Loading...

I have an old Yamaha set, a C200. (12, 14, 20 and 14 snare). I have had it for a year and it Is now FINALLY playable! The heads on it now are old and wore out, sound very dull. They're Remo Ambassador dots.

Any suggestions for heads? I play all types of music, everything but metal. I think I've read on here that Aquarian heads sound good on these old drums. Whatcha all think? I'm open to any and all suggestions

I don't play in a band, just along to cds and the radio. I'm not a hard hitter either.

I'm not looking for a specific sound.

Opinions?

Try Aquarians new-ish Z-100 coated. Tey are similar to Ambs, but in most places, like the dreaded GC, they typically run a couple of bucks less. I like 'em because they are the same thickness, as a single ply head, but feel more supple than Ambs.

Also, I run an Evans EC1 on my bass, sounds like a cannon, people love the sound. But, I did the unthinkable and modded my drums...since they are so thin, I layed-up a veneer of curly maple on the interiors and lacquered them. Made a HUGE difference in the tone. More focused and deeper. My front head was the original, in flat condition, no dents and the paint worn out. So I painted it, I learned this trick years ago. Using Rustoleum Ivory, I went around the head from 6 angles and let it dry between coats using the entire can. It makes sound like a calfskin. And if you don't like it, it only cost 3 bucks, not 40
