Where to place a Drum Battle??

Loading...

So I am putting together a birthday show set for August. It'll be my band as well as two other local bands made up of good friends. At some point in the show I wanted to have a 20-30 min drum battle between myself and the other two drummers. My thought was to do it before my band goes on as we plan to play an hour and a half set. My band thinks it should be after all the bands have played. My thought is that 5 mins after the last band played people have already left. They aren't as likely to leave if the main band hasn't even played yet. What do you guys think?

Now I must also add in - all the kits will be set-up at the same time. So it won't be solo - swap. It'll be a battle like you'd have seen back in the day. I know many people might get " bored " with the drum solo, but around here I feel because they are few and far between more people watch them. And if I bill a show with an Epic Drum Battle mid set, I can see people turning out for that, on the idea of " Oh s--t, this is a once a year " something not to be missed, and not to happen every month.

Nice idea..

Do the battle b4 the band's go on..,

That way people show up & stay for the bands show as well.

If yr putting it together,,.u call the shots.

The band will always said...at the end of the show is best...!

I'd put the drum battle where you suggested and put the weakest drummer in between the other two. And if one guy is far better, let him go last.

Shorten the time for this event 20-30 is a looooong time to keep an orignal flow going, plus it'll leave 'em wanting more!

Think of some themes to keep it more "show" like in nature... i.e. follow the leader, call and response, rotating syncopation, then battle mode.

+1 on this suggestion.

Your band members said that, probably, because they aren't drummers. I think doing this before the last band guarantees that people aren't going to split, and would also be a nice set up moving to the final band playing.

I agree with all the suggestions. In the past I've taken part in drum battles where no bands were involved, just drummers...so people knew what they were about to see and hear. Since this is primarily a multi-concert as the main attraction I think it'll be so cool to get the audience warmed up to the 'heartbeat' of each band that is participating giving some insight into each drummers style, strengths and showmanship...best of all, I hope there will be a lot of young folks who have never seen such a thing. Darn, I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it!
