Where NOS Kits End Up

Loading...

You Rogers guys will enjoy this performance by Peter Erskine on a NOS Rogers Buddy Rich Headliner. He got the kit from Steve Maxwell according to one of Maxwell's videos. Kit had been purchased by a drum shop and never sold until Maxwell got it with a few others. Erskine ended up with it. Looks like it's his at-home studio kit.

Oops, denied. You have to go to Youtube to view it. Looks for Mentor's Project with Peter Erskine. Interestingly, he has them tuned very low.

I recall a big DFO discussion about this kit early last year. $2500 for all four drums. Not bad at all considering. Here is the Maxwell video.

Cool kit. I'm not partial to WMP, but I love Rogers Swivomatic hardware. Rogers was clearly the most innovative company of the old "Big Four".

The famous NOS story that I remember is the Gretsch green nitron kit from....I dunno....years ago....that someone had uncovered in a little, old lady's attic. I don't remember all the details, but it was green nitro wrap with a complete, gold-plated hardware package...AND came with a beautiful set of old K Zildjian cymbals that had the original paper labels....Everything was there -even the old cases! Sadly, the kit and the cymbals were sold separately and for a LOT of money, i'm told. Apparently the husband was a drummer....He bought the kit...and then died shortly after...and the drums stayed up in the attic, untouched. And since all the hardware was gold plated, there was no pitting, etc....just like brand new!

*Edit I think it was called a Gretsch "Birdland" kit.

In 1976 or 1977 I stopped into one of Chicago's oldest music stores located on Halsted Street a block away from Maxwell Street. The last family member to own the store was (I think) the third generation of the family to operate the place. He died of old age. The remaining family members wanted to liquidate the inventory and store fixtures. I didn't see any drum sets that appealed to me because the only drums on the display floor were Vistalites which I have always disliked immensely. I asked the old wino, who had worked there forever if he had any more. He said there are some boxes in the attic. If I wanted to look up there, he'd hand me a flashlight. I found three unopened shipping cartons from Slingerland that were marked as containing a 14x20 bass drum, 16x16 floor tom, and 9x13 tom all in Green Sparkle. These boxes had been in the attic for at least five years. All that was missing was a tom holder for the center-mounted receiving bracket. I had a dual tom holder at home. I asked if he could get me a second matching mounted tom. He dialed a phone number, said a few words to the guy on the other end, and handed me the phone to talk with the Slingerland warehouse manager. The guy asked me a few questions about what type of receiving fixture would I want on the drum and would it be on my left or on my right. He said that I could pick it up at the factory the next day. The store charged me exactly what they paid for the drum. So, i then had a beautiful NOS Green Sparkle Slingerland set with the added tom a perfect match of color to play with my COB Krupa snare drum. This was my last gigging set before I gave up frequent gigging to take a job as a traveling manufacturer's representative in the music industry.

Sadly, I do not still have the green set. After it had been just sitting in cases in my house for a few years, I had the opportunity to swap the five drums for a very collectible guitar for my daughter. I was able to swap that guitar for an even more valuable 1967 Rickenbacker Fireglow 360 that she and her husband take very good care of.

I looked for a vid you mention. I only seen Erskine playing a roger''s wmp kit with one floor tom? Is this the kit you speak of?

Sure, Steve gets some dandy stuff, and some of it will carry a dandy price.

Steve offered me an NOS Roger's Kit about 20 years ago, this one had no documentation, but again, found in some drum store, supposedly a set rogers built for Buddy, to entice him back, buddy wanted free studio time too, CBS refused, and the story was that buddy supposedly told them to shove the set where the sun don't shine.

Although I had been out at Steve's house, and seen and played "his" Buddy Set, I seem to recall I seen this NOS set, or a couple of drums to the set out at the Chicago Vintage Drum Show.

Sure, it was a beautiful set, came with I believe an NOS COB Powertone Snare. And yeah, super mint, zero fade, like they just came from the factory from what I could see. I think it did come with all hardware, but not sure about a cannister throne? Memory is fuzzy.

But Steve's asking price was a little bit too rich for my blood 20 years back, $5600 for the set.

Three hours later at that same show, I bought my Barrett Deems WMP Slingerland Kit. Same "Buddy" configuration, endorser badges throughout, cannister throne, all hardware, and Humes&Berg Cases. (Randy Siefert RIP)

Steve saw that set, it got his approval. I think it was after that show that I was out at Steve's house, and sat in on his Buddy Set. Same set basically as my Barrett Set, but 4 years older (76 I recall) only hardware difference was a swivo tilter on the Splash Cymbal Rod. Oh, and Steve had a Dualist Pedal mounted up on the BD. I felt blessed sitting on the kit! :-)

Because I can recall him giving me a pair of Sealed Deems Sticks that day, and some written articles about Barrett.

Plus got to feat my eyes on some of his gorgeous wooden Dynasonic and Gladstone Snare collection, dang, those Gladstones visually and sonically were absolutely amazing!

Understandable. I’ve got rid of a lot of nice stuff for the same reason of not using it although your experience is much more noble. I still have my first set, ‘65 Club Date, also in cases but that ones not going anywhere.
