Where have all the Leedys Gone

From idrum4fun

I also would tend to agree that all Leedy drums, whether original Leedy or SlingerLeedy, seem to be getting more rare! That's why I'm hanging on to my 1965 Frank Capp snare drum, wrapped in original Green Satin Flame.-Mark

Another beauty. I'll have to go back through Rob's Display Your Leedys thread.

Since Dan Boucher asked to see my Black Diamond Pearl 1963 Shelly Manne set, here it is again. The drums came to me with heads stamped with the Henry Adler store logo. I'm also posting a same year vintage Leedy set (14x22, 9x13, 16x16) in Champagne Sparkle pictured with my Leedy Pink Glass Glitter Shelly Manne snare drum. I made the goat hide reso head as a tribute to DJ Fontana. I kept the head. I sold this set when I downsized my collection when we downsized to our retirement cottage.

Dan, these are for sale in my area.

I know the guy selling them and have bought/traded a few drum sets with him over the years. I could help facilitate the sale and shipping if you are so inclined.

I know a guy who has a (Slinger) Leedy set he bought new in the mid sixties. 12/14/18 in silver sparkle with a natural brass snare drum. Man, I wanted to buy those drums. He plays guitar now but has kept the drums for sentimental reasons. I came so close to getting them, to the point of having a time set up to come and get them, but at the last minute his son (full grown man who lives 1000 miles away) told him he thought his dad should keep them, so he did. He's a lawyer so not hurting for money or space so with no incentive to sell. I might still have a chance someday if he ever changes his mind. Then again I quit the (terrible) band he was hoping to keep me involved in so I no longer have the leverage of him wanting to keep me happy that I did at that time.

jmchoen: Thanks for that lead on that Leedy kit. However, I'm pretty well fixed into the 60's era, which is when I got into drumming. The only thing I've ever owned outside that era (save for a Rogers kit from 1970) was a 1920's Ludwig 5x15 parallel strainer model my wife picked up at a yard sale for $1. I was able to quickly trade it for a BDP Dynasonic that was for sale at that time for $400 with all sea-coast corroded chrome. I then bought a same era metal Dyna in great shape from Daddy's Junky Music for $125, swapped all the chrome and sold the metal one back to a different DJM shop for $50. I traded the BDP for a blue onyx to match my then Rogers blue onyx 20, 12, 14 set. All back around the early 90's, the heydays of vintage drum hunting/trading/buying/selling.

K.O.: Great story. Hope you get that second shot.

Leedybdp: Nice kits. The bass head is very nice too. I read a story some time back that Elvis had purchased that set for DJ from Herb Brochstein after Brochstein had been using it for about a year and the head already on the set and Fontana just left it that way.

Dan...That Herb Brochstein story is correct. I was fortunate to come across this Gretsch cocktail set, and bought it for not much money. The open-bottom big cocktail drum already had a few modifications. So, I felt no guilt in converting it to a two-headed drum and adding a popcorn snare wrapped with a scrap of matching wrap sent to me by a drum forum friend.

An original Brochstein badge. Very nice and a sweet kit.
