I am looking into 2 bass drums for sale - both from the early 80s. They are both 26".
One has it wrap but it's missing the outer hoop, head & rods and 2 of the 4 spurs PLUS someone added a tom holder to the previously "virgin" drum.
The other has had the wrap removed and been stained BUT has all it parts (original tom mount, outer hoop, head, rods and all 4 spurs).
Which one is worse? Which would you purchase?
I`d go with the one that has all original parts and no wrap. Wraps can sometimes not be saved and is forgiveable. and when the right shell with missing parts comes along, you`re done.
Turnning steel through the shell and removeing material can be hidden but not replaced !!
I forgot to mention that they are both Ludwigs w large classic lugs and both with blue & olive badges.
Well ,then in that case, get the cheaper one, wichever that is !!

First of all, the price would have to be right.
If I had to choose, it would be the one without extra holes. I'd take complete hardware (and HOOPS--28" hoops are hard enough to find...) over original wrap, as long as the drum wasn't totally trashed. But, if there was a wrapped drum with no extra holes and only a couple missing pieces of hardware, I'd go for that one. But, of course, price is a huge factor. It's such a complicated thing. In your scenario, I vote "no wrap".
Agreed.+1...parts are getting expensive.It may seem like the cheaper option,but its not,and a complete drum is cheaper than having to piece together a complete one.I assume you're going to use it as part of a drum set,so its going to have be refinished to match your other drums anyway.

I would go with the no wrap , just that more easier to deal with , and it's closer to original than the one with holes. i will be looking for a 26 in the near future my self.

+1 - No wrap, but complete, beats wrapped, but incomplete with extra holes, all day long. I'd even pay the few bucks extra for the complete one. It's 'no savings' if you buy an incomplete drum just a little cheaper than one that's all there. The price of period correct parts will get you every time! Trust me, 'been dere, done dat'.

I'll be the flipside.........if the wrap is very GOOD but missing parts and few extra holes I'd probably take that one. Original parts can be replaced but original wrap not so much. If the holes are small they are easy enough to fix. Granted you spend more on original parts but possibly down the road original wrap vs re wrap might edge things out price wise when resold. That said I would expect to spend less on a shell with nice original wrap but missing parts. Big holes 1" and larger in original wrap would steer me the other way though~!
