Hi, I have some pics of a vintage Ludwig Universal snare 6.5x14" (I believe it's NOB) that I would appreciate help dating. It's for a friend that wants me to try and clean up. Thanks in advance!

Looks like a 20s drum to me.

IMO, After 1928, that's a Leedy or Conn type shell, not a L+L 20's shell I think.

I'd say pre-1918...but I don't remember L & L ever drilling the bead for a strainer so do a tad more detective work and see if the top rim has two small holes where that strainer would have gone.

It does have the holes in the top rim. They were under the rim clip to the left of the stamp in the last pic above. Are more pics needed to help? Thanks so much for input.

here is a pic from the 1928 catalog. it shows a universal with the strainer like yours mounted on the hoop. not saying your drum is circa '28. just wanted to provide you with a pic.

yours appears to be a 6.5 model. you'll notice that the 6,5 depth was not listed in the '28 catalog.

Thank you Mike. I have looked through the catalogs and noticed the same thing. That's why I was unsure about this one and needed help dating it. I think this drum is nickel over brass too. Magnet doesn't stick. I could also see a brassy color in the holes after removing the tube lugs. I was also thinking I may trade this person that I'm cleaning this drum up for, a drum kit for this Ludwig Universal snare drum if they'd let it go.

Thank you Mike Curotto. Maybe someone didn't have long enough vintage snare cord and modified it or it was done factory because of the 6.5" depth? There was a nice threaded type half round nut that fit in the bead for the screws.

Again, thanks to all for the great informative input!
