What Would You Do?

Ask yourself this question:"Why would the other party want your Ludwig kit so much that they're willing to trade a top of the line newer modern kit for it?" Answer:Because they'll be rid of something to which they attribute less value, while gaining something they've long wanted to own.Don't be a chump!Anyone can always purchase a used newer drum kit.

I don't just look at how much a kit is worth, if I'm not happy with the sound of a kit, I'll get rid of it. I love vintage drums, especially Ludwig, but I've come across a few lemons. I've owned several modern kits that I also loved, but never had any real sound issues with them, I just get in the mood for something new, so I trade or sell them. There is no question in my mind, before even playing this GMS kit, that it will blow away the Club Dates. They may not have that vintage "mojo", but they are well crafted drums.

That being said, my "Dream" kit is not just the finish, but the sound, if I can find that right vintage Ludwig kit, I will do a trade, not because I necessarily think the Ludwigs sound better, but, I do like the vibe of vintage drums. There is definitely a coolness about them that I don't see in a lot of modern kits.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

This relative of deceased local drummer was selling off his old drum kits. 2 years later he still has the GMS kit and cannot sell it even at a decent price. Nice drums. Big. But resale value not good.

Referencing Larry Z's post,I have seen two GMS Grand Master kits in the last two years sell for 700.00-800.00. Even if a Grand master is 10 years old I feel safe saying 4 pc cost pretty close to 3000.00 originally.

I can see how a small builders Taiwanese/chinese hardware/keller shell kit would take a major hit on re sale, but GMS has been around quite awhile, the lugs are machined, and the hardware is proprietary to them.

Great for the buyer. A GMS should last a lifetime.

Well, I did a complete 180, not only did I NOT get a vintage kit, I did NOT even get a wood kit! I was given several kits to choose from at Rockin Robin....

1 Rogers - 12,13,16,22 in a faded gold glass glitter, it looked cool, but the toms were more faded than the kick and there were some smudges on the toms.

2 Gretsch - stop sign badge in a dark walnut finish, 12,13,16,22, nice kit, but it had a few scratches in the finish.

3 Camco - Oaklawn, 13,16,22,14 in a faded gold sparkle finish, I almost went for this one because of the matching snare, but someone rewrapped the 16 in gold sparkle and it wasn't even close to matching the rest of the kit.

4 Fibes - Austin era acrylic amber kit, 12,16,20 w/matching 6x13 snare and a Zildjian K dark crash. I went with this one because I love Fibes, it had a matching snare, the shells were scratch free and he through in the K cymbal.

I'll have pics posted tomorrow, got to get some sleep, it's been a long day.

Nope, I dealt with the head hauncho, Bart. He loved the GMS kit I brought in and made sure I went home happy. I was having a difficult time making a decision, so he said, ya know what, if you take the Fibes I'll throw in a cymbal of your choice, that was the deal maker, he even gave me a new 12" coated ambassador, he's a great guy to do business with, especially when you bring him nice drums.Cool1
