What type of snare is this?

From neorich05

In this case this is a 1974 Tama Imperialstar King Beat, but was released soon after Star became Tama, the mechanism still had the Star logo and triple flange hoops, late 1975 they changed the casts and had Tama logo on the mechanism and changed to die cast hoops. As to COB, I don't know. I never tried a magnet on the shell yet.

+1.Those imperialstar badged steel shelled drums were either the Kingbeat or Powerline, which had a different strainer. The shells are heavy chrome over steel, one piece. They weren't COB.The lugs weren't the best so,they will crack under high tension.Thhey are great sounding drums, and with diecast hoops, sound like gunfire if you play rimshots on them.

I will look for original parts just for the heck of it. I have no plans to resell this though, so I don't really want to spend big $$ just to have a players snare. I do want it to look and sound it's best though, so a good cleaning and some new parts, original or not.

A magnet won't stick to brass. It also won't stick to aluminum so this test is inconclusive on brass v aluminum. However the magnet test is useful when testing brass v steel as the magnet will stick to steel. Useful for determining whether or not you've got brass or steel hoops. That's about it.

It's a decent snare you got there. I used to own one briefly and I remember it sounded great! Get some new heads and wires and Bob's your auntie.
