What to look for when buying 70’s Ludwig Vistalite kit

Finally got around stripping the hoops. The citristrip works like a charm. I’ll post more pictures as I work along.

Thank you for the advice. I’ll post in the wanted area.

And this is the washer I was talking about that’s missing.

Nothing to crazy as far as progress goes. Been a bit busy getting ready for the holidays.

Got to the last tom, the floor tom. After stripping it down to bare shell, I gave it a nice clean and polish. No cracks or major scuffs. Just very minimal stuff. Novus products are awesome by the way. I used them for my motorcycle windshields before and they work great for the shells too.

Here a two pictures of the parts I’m cleaning now.

Take care when re-assembling as to not over-tighten the hardware...Doing this could crack the shells...

Cheers

I appreciate the advice granto. It would be disastrous if I crack the shells. I want these drums to last for another 40-50 years.

I finished the floor tom. Complete tear down, clean and polish.

I also got around to finish stripping the bass drum hoops. They had several layers of paint. But they are bare now, ready for fine sanding and paint.

Great job so far ! The drums look really nice. If you take all the sound advice given to you by the vistalite gurus, then your kit will be tip top. Also, i suggest that instead of painting the hoops, i'd opt for a nice black stain. It gives the bass drum a classier look and lasts long and is more durable than any paint job. I did this to a Ludwig rocker kit that i restored a few years back and it looked great. I also sealed it with 2 coats of satin lacquer. Smooth, and you can still see the natural grain of the wood through the stain. Good luck with the rest of the job and show us pics of the completed kit when you're done !

Cheers,

Rob

That’s a great idea. I’ll have to do that to the next kit I restore.

I agree though, I need that silver sparkle inlay. Hard to come by.

I have a question. Do you know the color of the inlay used on these clear vistas? Is is silver sparkle?
