What To Do With The Shells??? Last viewed: 4 seconds ago

Loading...

Hey

I've inherited two marching shells from a school. They are dog tired and in seriously rough shape - finish wise. But, the wood is very very nice. One is a 5 ply Slingy and the other is a 6 ply Luddy. Both are 15s (I think) and deep.

I was thinking I could offer them up to a motivated and creative individual who might make them into shallow snares. Any ideas? Any takers?

Michael, how many snares do you want? Does the Slingy have re-rings?

I'd be interested...

Both of these shell builds lack rerings. They are the thicker layups of the later 70s and early 80s. The Slingy shell has the long full length lugs. The Luddy is actually a single headed timp tom with the chrome band around the bottom. Both have a beat up white wrap. I don't need the shells. I wouldn't mind one single snare from what looks like four potential snares. But, I don't need any of it. I was thinking that the Slingy shell could squeeze me out a snare that I've been hunting for my kits. I need a deeper wood finished 5 ply snare for my later 70s Slingy kits. Anyway, I've got the shells. Just don't know how to proceed or if someone wants to do it and use them for themselves. geez, I'm not using proper English now. I'm in a rut.

I take on this kind of stuff more often than I ought... but, how much you looking to get out of them?

No money. One deeper Slingy snare. That's it.

RogerSling,

I aquired a few marching snares for repair from a school closet awhile back myself. One shell was so damaged that I couldn't send it back repaired so I swapped it out for a useable snare and kept the parts. Well, I got motivated to create something usefull out of the pile of bones and I came up with a 12 lug 7 X 15 inch snare. More recently I chopped the stripped long tube lugs in half and salvaged a really nice timbale out of the deal. This started out as a Ludwig Colleseum 15 X 12, which is probably what you have too. Maybe these pictures will inspire you to hold onto the parts.

... ok ... now THAT's cool. Nice work.

I have a STRONG suspicion that I can get a nice deep dish snare outta the

Slingy shell. It's good wood. I believe there's a snare in there somewhere. It'll be a natural wood finish with whatever snare mech I happen to grab at that moment. I'm open to someone crafty taking this on ... I don't want any money for the shells. I just want a single snare back. I'll cover the costs associated. I'm just not all that 'comfortable' with my wood finishing skills (or lack thereof).

If no takers, I'll tackle it this summer. If I'm doing it ... you may want to call the medic around June. I'm sure to whack part of a hand off by then.
