What size drums do you prefer?

Loading...

I've owned and played drums in a lot of sizes but I didn't feel truly at home until I sat behind a kit with a 14"x10" tom, 16"x16" and 18"x16" floor toms and a 26"x14". Since then I'm all in favor of large size drums with the classic shell depth.

Preferred set is one tom, two floor toms and two kicks in sizes like 14" or 15" tom, floor toms between 16" and 20" and 24" or 26" kicks. I've never fancied 28" kicks, they are just to big.

My current set up is 15"x12" tom, 18"x16" and 20"x16" floor toms and two 26"x14" kicks. It's a 70's Ludwig 3-ply kit with Mahogany Cortex wrapping. I'm very pleased with it...

Simple for me:

22" bass, 13" rack, 16" floor, 14" x 6 1/2" snare. My main kit is a 1970 Ludwig kit, Natural Mahogany. Got this baby at a yard sale for $200! It came with hard shell cases, cymbals (old Zildjian), WORKING Speed King pedal, stands, rolling case for all of the hardware, throne, snare, etc and a wonderful Superphonic Snare. The only thing missing was a throne. Who could pass this deal up, right?

Anyway.....for heads, I found a combonation of them that I like. Bass - Aquarian Super kick II. I love the tone. I have found nothing that I like more then this. Tried it once...fell in love with it. Toms - Remo Weather King Emperor Coated. Tried everything and went back to these. Snare - Evans Power Center. I have been using these for years and I simply love them. I have them on all of my snares. On my Pearl kit I used Evans Hydraulic heads before I sold it. Those old power toms sounded sweet with them on it. Now that all I play is blues, the Pearl kit just collected dust.

I use the same combonation of heads on my '62 Ludwigs as well.
