Did APK shells have re-rings? I thought they were later, thicker shells? They could have been painted by the previous owner to look cool, afterall the hoops are all gone from the bottoms to make them louder, and manytimes people who removed the bottom heads would also do the deed of painting the interiors.

I've never seen Apk/Xpk's with cast rims, only high-line drums.Black painted interiors is pretty common on late 70's era drums, like Apk's.I think your Gigmaker guess is right on...very nice, high quality equipment.

Do all of the shells have re-rings? I can't tell in the pix. If that is the case, this might have been at one time a Resonator kit, where the reso liner was removed for whatever reason. maybe to replace or tighten some lugs. Once removed, the liner would be very difficult to put back with good results.

:2Cents:THAT sounds like a very plausible explanation. Some early Resonators had no Resonator badge.
