Have to agree with Mike & Steve..

Reckon it was buried vertically deep in the bowels of one of those old Wurlitzer Carousel type machines..

But what size is it and any evidence of a strainer??

Cheers

From tamadrm

I think it has to do with tuning all 8 batter and 8 reso lugs at the same time. There are 8 corresponding T- rods top and bottom, which are used to attach to each lug.I imagine that once attached, tension is taken up using the T-rods,till even tension is achieved. The drums could then be tuned ,by using that main master gear, which will turn all the T-rods,at the same time...tuning the drum evenly. That's a guess but, that's how it looks to me.Steve B

I've come back to the pictures all day, Steve and I really feel that you have made an intelligent and very astute observation! If this device does not function in the manner you describe, it should! Excellent analysis!

Ok so I had a bit of a look and most of you were right. The big cog thing at the bottom makes the 2 metal blocks open or close. There are actually no lugs or T rods to speak of on the drum, just a hook type thing attached to the rim with the wire wrapped around the bottom. (photos coming). Each hook then corresponds with one of the tuning pegs on the metal block. So the best way I can put it, is that its a drum that you tune no different to a guitar. The only evidence of a strainer I can see is the regular holes in the bottom rim for the wires to pass through. Its a regular 8 "lug", 14". It gets weirder..... the guy I bought it off says he has 2 more that are the same and Im probably gonna get them too seeing as they are so cheap
