What Model is this Slingerland Snare Drum?

Loading...

I got lucky and found a vintage Slingerland snare drum at a yard sale this weekend. I've been able to Google up that the badge dates from 1959-1961, but I can't figure out what model this is. I think it's a student model because there's no muffler nor holes to install one.

But the shell looks like it could be one-ply. Don't be fooled by the re-ring.

One other thing is that the strainer is a "Rapid Strainer" -style WFL replacement. I'm guessing that the original strainer was a Slingerland Rapid.

$20! Well, I also bought a replacement lug (one lug's mounting screw broke off inside the screw hole in the lug). And I've ordered Aquarian American Vintage heads (top & bottom), and Puretone Custom wires.

Does anyone know for certain what model this is?

Thanks for looking. http://www.bigbangzero.com/slingerland1.JPG

Pics 2 and 3 don't work for me.

If it's a one-ply shell, then it's a Gene Krupa snare. It's technically a "Radio King", but they didn't call them Radio Kings during a few year span (1959-1961 badge is within this span). I know this stuff because I just picked up a snare/tom/bass drum of the exact same era. Single-ply snare, 3-ply mahogany interior bass drum, 3-ply maple interior tom...same drums as the Radio Kings, but not considered Radio Kings, solely due to the catalog labeling.

Very nice snag! It looks to be in great condition!

Is it six lugs? If so, you have a Deluxe Student Model. I own one of these and it's a great drum.

Well I'll take a run at it....

Hoops are not original and the throw is not original. I can't tell if there is a tone control or not, so I'm going with 1. Student model that's been modified a bit (single flange and clips replaced by Ludwig hoops) 2. Hollywood Ace model that's missing some original parts. I think it's #1 though. Nice sounding snares BTW and for $20 a nice score.

30's Radio King - 26, 13, 13, 16
49 - WFL Ray McKinley - 26, 13, 16
58 - Slingerland Duco
58 - Slingerland Krupa Deluxe
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 20, 12, 14
70 - Ludwig Champagne Sparkle - 22 (need), 13, 16
And some others..

Thanks caddy. I fixed the links -- you might have to refresh this thread page to update.

Rob -- it has 8 lugs. I saw in an old online Slingerland catalog that some student models had 8 lugs.

What do you guys make of the no muffler?

GD- I think so, too, about the rims. I'm eyeing some '70s Sling rims to put on it.

No muffler on the Student Models. That was one of the upgrades to the Hollywood.

I had a tone control and some hoops so I made my own Hollywood Ace from a Student Model. :) And I scored the hoops on here from a TORN UP (looked like the drum was hit by a bat) 50's model but the hoops were in great shape.

Oh...I missed the "no muffler" part. Sorry. Honestly, I don't know what that means...

From the picture of the bearing edge, I can't tell if it's a 1-ply or a 3-ply. On some spots on my Hollywood Ace (3-ply), you could swear that it's 1-ply, but in other sections, it's very obviously 3. On my Krupa snare, it's VERY obvious that it's 1-ply all around. Are there any spots of extreme sudden discoloration on the ply?

Also, worthy of note, is I've seen several anomalies of Slingerland AND Ludwig snares where they "would be" considered such-and-such a snare, except for one or two minor details--incorrect throw-offs, lack of a muffler, etc etc etc... It's not uncommon to see, and I've seen a fair share. Perhaps somebody on the line that day wasn't paying attention, or stayed up too late the previous night and was hungover (totally speculation, but we all have bad days and know what it's like...).

From what I can see in that pic, it looks like it's single-ply. For that, I'm sticking with "Gene Krupa" snare, because it's the Gene Krupa shell, but I'm no expert in what it would officially be called...
