I always liked the sound of a classic RC.

I don't know if this will give me a similar sound.

Can the snares be switched out

That is a concert snare. Birch shell, "super sensative" mechanism. I doubt you can put any other snares on it because of the throw mechanism. Bet it sounds great.

1964 Ludwig Downbeat Black Diamond Pearl (12,13,14,16,20)
1976 Ludwig Stainless Steel "Bop" (12,14,18)
1998 Ayotte "Ray Era" Wood Hoop Copper Sparkle (10,12,14,16,20)

That strainer mechanism looks and works very much like the Slingerland Slapshot! It was designed to keep the wires under tension even in the "off" position.

Is 8 snare strands enough to get a sensitive buzz

Here's a snip from the 1986 Yamaha Drum catalogue. I had a brass Yamaha snare from that era and it was an outstanding drum. In fact, I still play that drum on occasion as it now belongs to the concert band in which I play percussion.
