What is wrong with today's youth ?

I thought i'd post this thread because i think the time has finally come to address this situation, and because over the last few years , as a very busy gigging musician, i've noticed it's been increasingly more prominent in our society, no matter where we live..

When i was younger, i did some pretty stupid things when drunk, but never anything that would require law enforcement, an overnight trip to the slammer, or even hospitalization..

While i realize it's hard being a teen or young adult in this insane world we currently live in, i adamantly believe that there is absolutely no excuse for unnecessary violence, or vandalism of any kind..

Where am i going with this ? Read on and see..

About an hour ago, i arrived from a duo gig i do with my guitar player.

On my way home in the cab, not half a block away from my home, three drunk punks in their early 20's decide to act like 3 ***holes, and cause some unnecessary violent and stupid behavior.. These punks were talking to a friend of theirs in a convertible which was stopped in the middle of the road, just off the corner from street, while the green light was on, and blocking my cab from bringing me home.

The cab driver honked his horn so the car could make way for us to turn the corner.. As the car blocking the road began to drive away, the "3 stooges" decide to pull the finger at my cab driver, yelling racist remarks and giving him the finger as well,(cabby was African and easily in his late 60's) and then, it happened.. One of these drunken, sub-human excuses for a human being, decides to kick the side of the cab a few times, while we were just trying to make our way through to get to my home.

If it wasn't for the fact that they were 3, i would have brought my gear home, grabbed the top part of an old cymbal stand, chase that mother***er down, and pummel his a**. But what would that get me ?

Criminal charges pressed, and missed work for possibly a very long time.. The younger me would have easily gone ballistic, but the more sensible, calmer, family man of today wouldn't do that, and didn't do that tonight..

I may be overreacting, and this may very well be sheer anger talking, but i think it's time to teach these kids some manners, the old school way, the likes of which would make them soil their pants, and run home crying to their bedroom at mom and dad's house.. To all of our members who may read this and maybe in the same age vicinity as these jerks, i'd like to say that i'm NOT pigeonholing your demographic, and if it seems like i am, then i apologize. One of these days these millennials will get what they deserve, and the end result may be unfortunate, or even tragic, which i sincerely hope never happens..

However, if this happens again, i may unleash a fury on the unlucky victim which will make him think twice before attempting behavior of sheer stupidity, ever again. I hope none of you ever have to experience the unpleasantness of what happened to me tonight, and even though it was actually nothing, it could have been a lot worse..Venting this experience makes me feel a lot better, and helps calm me down, but an hour ago, i was beyond anger and even began to feel like i was going to pass out from the blood rushing to my head ! LoLoLoLoLoLoLoLo:mad::mad: These are issues i've been working on for a couple of years now, but I have been doing a lot better..

On a final note, i'd like to know if any of you have experienced something like this, and what you did about it..

I think it would help venting some of these past aggressions out safely, for me that is ! ;)

Cheers,

Rob

The best recourse I can suggest is to PLAY YOUR DRUMS LOUDER. May not solve the problem of today's youth, but it will help you vent, and perhaps the Youth Of Canada (I never thought as an American I would be saying this) will hear your great chops and turn from hooliganism to music.

Peace

That's kinda funny. Fools and cowards get brave in when in a group. It sounds like you did the smart thing by not engaging.

I am a millennial.

I am ashamed of the overall millennial generation perception.

I agree that something needs to change.

I am thankful I had good parents that taught me not to be a victim and take responsibility for my actions.

I can only hope to instill these values into my children to try and break the cycle.

Things have changed, and yet they haven't really. There were always ***hole teenagers and young adults who acted the same way when I was around that age. Maybe it is more prevalent now...or maybe it just seems that way because we older folks have grown up and are less tolerant of such behavior than we were then.

Thanks for your comment PressRoll, it's much appreciated..

You seem to have a good your head on your shoulders, and look like you'd be on your way to being a great parent.. I know that not all people in their 20' and early 30's are idiots, cause i have nephews of that age and they're both successful family men who've never done anything idiotic when they were younger, at least not to my knowledge. If they have any of me in them, which i think they do, i can safely assume that they were just like me when i was that age..

cheers,

Rob

You're absolutely right Vater.. Things haven't really changed, although i think with today's generation, they feel they have this false sense of entitlement, known as the "me, me, me" generation, with little or no regard for anyone else's feelings, or for their behavior. As long as there is school and peer pressure, and 2 for 1 beers, there'll always be morons out there, venting out their frustrations in unconstructive ways..

I'm only 46, and have fortunately been told that i look 10 years younger, so, sometimes i can blend in with these young people, and being a musician, most of them think it's cool or whatever, so they feel that they can speak to me like they would they're buddies, which is why i now know these kids and they're behavioral patterns inside out, cause i've been exposed to it for so long. Mine was just an isolated incident, but i've been witnessing it quite often as of late..

Ironically, while i was on a break at the gig, a police officer friend of ours was on duty and stopped in front of the pub to calm some of these kids down cause they were making a racket on the streets..We of course went to say hi, but funnily enough, he was taking photos with some young ladies ! Lol ! He's in his mid 30's, very friendly and outgoing as well, and is a good looking dude, which i assume was the reason for the ladies wanting to take pics with him.. As i came up from behind him to say hi, i tapped him on the shoulder, and ended up being in the pic in the background.. One of those drunken morons looks at me and goes, "Dude !! Why did you "photo bomb" !?!? Get outta the way ! " I looked at him with a smile, although a "crocodile smile", and politely told him to shut up, and mind your own business while i say hi to my friend". I wish you were there to witness the stupid look he had on his face, and the profuse apologies.. Just that, made my night.. ;)

Cheers,

Rob
