What is this snare?

Hi Everybody!

This one has no name on it, not even a small "Made in...." on the strainer.

The coating and general finish makes me think sixties.

The shell is very thin, 3 layers veneer, with reinforcement rings in tha same veneer, the wood something porous and light.

This has me thinking early japanese.

But the lugs are real heavy and nice, there are 10 of them, the strainer is a Ludwig/Premier-type - and the tuning rods are 5 mm metric with both a slot and hex-head, which makes me think Germany - east or west.

Anyone who can recognize it?

Since taking the pics this morning, I have cleaned it, and it became really nice to look at. I had to glue the re-ring a couple of places, but otherwise is is in very good order. Oh, and I had to make a knob for the damper. I drilled a hole in an old japanese damperknob after sawing off the rod on it - and then tapped a thread in it. Works and looks fine. Assembly tomorrow, when the glue is dry too, and I have returned from this evenings rehearsal with the band.

Nice snare, great looking lugs. Wood grain horizontal or vertical? If they're vertical, chances are it's MIJ BUT, I've seen tension rods like that on a few Eastern European drums, saw them here methinks.

Vertical on the inner and outer layer, japanese style.

An extra, strengthening layer of veneer under the strainer.

But the 5 mm rods and 10 lugs doesn´t point to Japan, does it?

Cannot see this as a Japanese drum. It is also Nickel plated isn't it? That would be very unusual for an early Japanese drum + the lug design and tension rods and 10 lugs not in any way fitting with their early development. Can you provide pictures of the interior of the shell and the muffler construction? That might help a lot. My general feeling is European but not necessarily eastern European. The triple flange hoops are a mystery---very odd for any non-American drum prior to 1970.

After going over the photos.I would say its not a M.I.J. snare.Iam thinking it could be a Leedy made snare from the late 20's to up to the late 30's.The lugs look like Leedy lugs,the strainer looks like a mix of Leedy/Ludwig the handle looks to be Ludwig the rest looks like Leedy so maybe its a Ludwig/Leedy strainer.Are you sure about the T-rods being metric in the late 20's-30's Leedy did make a T-rod that the threads were 10/24 not 12/24 like most drums were...Photos of the inside of the shell,butt plate,muffler would help....Mikey

A 5 mm nut fits the rods easily, so unless 10/24 is really close, it is metric.

Somehow the pretty low quality of the wood doesn´t say America to me.

The previous owner, that seemed to know quite a bit about drum gear, actually thought the drum to be a lot older than I do - stating it was from the forties or fifties...

Not a cross-headed screw in sight.

There is not threads in either strainer nor butt-plate for screwing on backplates.

And yes, it might very well be nickel, not chrome. A little duller and warmer.

My guess as Meazzi based on the fact that I've seen hex M5 tension rods on Meazzi only - never anywhere more.
