What is going on with this Radio King Snare?

Loading...

Hey guys. Still in the hunt for an RK snare from the 40's. Looks like this one is available for sale, but I'm unable to tell what is going on with this drum. Replacement butt, strainer looks wonky, no snare gate, and incorrect bottom rim. Is that about right? Seller says it is either 6.5 or 7 deep. Also, the seller says that he has the tension rod clips for the top rim. Can anyone make sense of this?

It may not be a Radio king. In most cases, the radio king would have the snare gates, which there doesn't seem to be holes for. And a one ply maple shell. Also the lower hoop would be different too. And by the looks of it, it looks like a 6 lug. Which i'm not sure radio kings ever had.... The wrap is toast on this thing too. It will start flaking off soon if it gets used i'm guessing..

This is what a typical radio king snare looks like. Let me know if you need any other pics..

Might be this from the 1940 Slingerland Snare catalog scans in the Drum Guide

Buddy Rich Artists' Model Radio King "Swingster" with some replacement hoops/tensioners shenanigans going on......

Or, not........:)

A better pic of the badge might be of some help...

That late 20's-early 30's Artist bottom hoop is worth as much as the rest of the drum! The drum is most likely a Buddy Rich Radio King.

So out of interest Mark, what is a bottom hoop like that worth? And are those claws on the top hoop off a wood hooped model or just standard bass drum claws?

Well, depending on how badly one needs a bottom hoop would dictate the value. I'd estimate $175-$200. My comment was slightly facetious but the condition of the drum is so rough that the parts become more valuable than the drum.

[QUOTE=cooper;354470] I'd estimate $175-$200.

That would pay for the proper hoops. It looks like it's still a proper maple shell. So you won't have to deal with all the excess hardware..
