What finish is this Slingerland?

Loading...

I'm trying to figure out what finish this is...cheerywood oil? teakwood oil? Some other burnt orange finish? Not sure if some of the fade was factory applied as well as sun-aged or if the fade is due strictly to age/sun exposure.

I don't have the drum in my possession...I'm considering buying it.

Been looking for matching snare, rack, and floor toms for a complete kit...would be easier if I knew what I was looking for!

Thoughts? It's a black and silver badge, which is late 70's early 80's era. Here's a '79 catalog if you wanna help me take a good guess:

Have you looked under a lug, or under a bass claw to get a more original example of the color ? It's difficult to tell from your photo, but if these were veneers, couldn't you get a clue from the grain pattern ?

Your hoops have a Cherry or Red Violin hue. Part of the problem is that these catalog page colors are so inaccurate to begin with.

That is a mid 80s Slingerland Spirit bass drum in Maple finish.

If it's your cup of tea, the Spirit line is cheap enough to pick up. The shells should be 9 ply Taiwan built cheap "mahogany".

I don't have the drum in my possession...I'm considering buying it. I might go check it out and look under a lug for unfaded finish to reference.

I'll find out about the badge/serial/# plies/yes or no re-rings etc. to try and ID this thing better.

I thought the badge looks like a silver and black oval Niles badge, which, according to vintagedrumguide.com is 70's through early 80's, which would be Niles, 5 ply shell, just before Slingy produced the Taiwan shells, right?

The Spirit badges look a lot like the Niles ovals, but they don't say "Niles" and lack serial numbers. I'd be shocked to find that it's not a Spirit bass.
