What do you think of using steel wool to "clean up" old stands, lugs etc.?

Loading...

Has any one tried dropping small pieces, like lugs, into a media tumbler, like reloaders (gun owners who load their own ammo) use to clean the empty brass cartridges?

Seems as if the media were gentle enough for brass, it'd be ok to try on chrome or nickel.

Plus it'd be a hands-free cleaning system...

Just throwing out ideas. I'm not keen on putting 40hrs of time into cleaning lugs! Eye Ball

I use a polishing wheel on a bench grinder. I know that sounds like cheating, but it gets the job done in a minimal time frame. I never use steel wool and think this entire thread is utterly ridicules. Everyone but one on this thread knows that steel wool ruins chrome. I saw a supraphonic snare that had been steel wooled, and I wouldnt want it. Getting rust off of drum chrome takes elbow grease not steel wool!!!!!

What is the difference between steel wool and sos?

Although I can't find any direct rating of SOS pads, I don't believe it's as fine as #000 or #0000. If you look at the chart I found, that company has cleaning chrome as a proper application for their #000 (or finer) product along with auto polish.

Interestingly, S.O.S has cleaning auto chrome and trim listed as one of its applications.

I probably not use steel wool to remove rust, but what about pitting? I've read 0000 steel wool used lightly is recommended. Anything other products that remove pitting out there?

I thought about that... Would it be too difficult to source similar or same rivets to replace the originals?Edit: Also, if they were able to plate it the first time, why can't it be re-plated???

I will tell you now that replating ius more expensive than buying new parts as a example i wanted a few rogers straight cymbal arms for gigging so i made them myself the cost of materials was like 5 bucks the cost to replate 4 of them was over 100.00 are the beautiful you bet do they work as good as originals again no problem but i could have bought 4 original for about 60 bucks but the chrome on them sucks my chrome is great but costly..
