you start to mess up with the beats--mid-song--?? We tried a new song and I was souping it up a bit and started to mess up the beat for about 5 seconds I finally got back on track.My question is,should you stop and start again or try to fix it and keep playing.I don't think anyone noticed but to me it did not sound very good for that 5 or so seconds..

Always keep a pulse going.................quarter notes on the ride or hi-hat, or on the hi-hat on the foot. That gives the other band members something to latch onto.
If it's on a verse section, sometimes you can use it as an "excuse" to build to the chorus. Just play quarters on the hi hat or ride, and wait to feel the groove again. Once you got it, come in strong on the chorus. Sometimes that really helps "kick" the song and can be a welcome change from the ordinary.

Good advice. I always played the hats or ride until I could find the 2 and 4 backbeat again. It happens extremely rarely today, fortunately, but it happens to all of us sooner or later.

I'm in the keep time camp to prevent magnifying something that may not be real noticeable into the obvious. You can even keep time on the snare, playing some 1/8's (in a crescendo even), and mask the error as a pseudo-fill, until you find the primary pattern again.
Keep it going. Go back to a basic 4-4 beat them get back into the groove
