What cymbals to go with old ish Slingerland kit?

Hi, I just picked up a Slingerland kit from a yard sale. It came with the same crappy cymbals that the PDP kit I am borrowing has. Even though I hav been playing for five years, I know that the Sabian B8's don't sound like the old recordings of my favorite songs. So what cymbals do you experts recommend. Thanks, Stu.

Your ear is your best way to determine what you like. I have some older Paistes that I use very little, but they sound phenomenal. For gigs I use a combination of Paistes, Istanbul, Zildjian and Sabian. The Sabian is only at outdoor venues, as it has a long decay. Inside gig usually require thinner, smaller sizes.

The music you play can have more of an influence as does where you play. Most of the gigs I do, a set of hats, a ride and 2 crashes do the trick. If I feel like lugging out the Paistes, that usually is rides, 3 crashes and hats.

For a vintage kit, there's nothing like era-correct cymbals to round it out. The choice, depending on sound to your ear, is your choice.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Perhaps if you describe your set (year/era/, style (concert/ double head, & sizes) . You could get some more specific suggestions. (Though the previous answer is the best advice)

Looking at the website legends, I have a '58 base drum, a 70-80s rack and I have no idea what floor as there's no badge. It's what is called a orphan set, as it seems nothing matches. The snare is a cb700.

Where do I go? You seem to know quite a bit.

Use your ears. The mere fact you recognise that those awful B8's won't work is a step in the right direction.

Are Paistes particularly heavy? I am really a babe in the woods as far as this goes. Sorry to be a pain. I did see some Paistes in guitar center for pretty cheap. Ae Paiste alphas good?

bbk- a couple of pawn shops are on my route today. I think I am going to pop by those. I am also going to Guitar Center to look at their used gear.thanks for the help!
