What age is my Ludwig Snare

Loading...

Hi everyone. First time on this site.

I just took posession of a Ludwig Chrome Snare. Keystons Badge, Serial No. 3111703...Chicago USA 10 lug with what looks to be a P-85 strainer...(Black Face) Strangely, the badge is high on the drum..top of it hidden under hoop. Inside is a bluish tag that reads:

"A Reliable Plating Process Lud A Loy Corrosion Resistant Anti Galvanic Finish"

The dating guide in the Ludwig book stops at 1969 or so, and there's nothing showing a serial number in this range. Do I have a drum from the 80's? And, is this a "Supraphonic?"

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!

Sounds like a mid-80's Supraphonic.

Thanks all....

Amazing...No real definitive answers on this one...I just wrote to Steve Maxwell, hopefully he'll have some info. I do believe it to be from the 80's, but that's as close as I can get.

Does anyone know if the quality of the Supra was any less at this time?

Thanks,

Stix

Hello,

Exactly what is the definitive answer you need?

Did you want the exact year it was made? or do you have another question about the drum?

I'm confused, because there is a lot of great information and there is still unanswered questions....

Let us know what they are.

These were the questions asked:

Do I have a drum from the 80's?

And, is this a "Supraphonic?"

The answers are "yes" and "yes".

The badge on your drum was only used for the last two years of Chicago production, 1983 and 1984. To narrow it down closer than that would be nearly impossible, unless you were able to determine the date of purchase as well as the date the drum entered retail inventory.

As far as quality, the only differences are minor.

The rims on your drum are likely 2.3mm, whereas the older Supraphonics used 1.6mm rims. Most vintage folks prefer the older, thinner rims, as they weigh less and thus allow a drum to resonate more.

The shell of your drum is made of Ludalloy, an aluminum alloy, and is the same exact thing as a Supraphonic shell from 15 years earlier. However, the badge on your drum prevents the head from laying with zero interference...a strange design quirck coming from the company that designed the only truly perfectly round shell. Some players claim that hurts the sound as well.

Lastly, your drum likely has 20 strand snares rather than the older 18 strands. Compare an older set of Ludwig snare wires with new...there is a notable difference.

Having said all of the above, I will add that I doubt you will find a drummer alive that can consistently differentiate between a 1983 and a 1963 Supraphonic in a blindfold test.

That is what I was asking..they year or, time line of the drum. I will say it sounds and plays just like a Supra from years back.

The "Ludwig Book" ends around '79 as far as dating a drum. The one thing I did find was the P-85 (Black Face) It went from 12 holes to (I think) 2 right around the early 80's. This drum has the P-85 with 12 holes, so, this puts it in that area.

Thanks again,

Stix

I have a pointy B/O badged Supra from 1979 with a 2-hole black-faced P-85.

Hello everyone! As an old drummer and with no expertise on ludwig drums. this is my opinion about Ludwig snares built during the transformation period of 1983-84. I have a Ludwig snare from this period. Like some of you I cannot find any serial numbers for drums produced during these years. My snare has the large keystone badge but NO numbers. The badge has chicago drum co. on it. My drum looks to be 6" or 6.5" I havent began restoration on it yet, but I will tell you that no part of the keystone badge lays under the drum head. The badge lays NEAR the head but does not interfere with it.The snare I have has the older snare wires and the date ordered was Sept. 21,1984 and took about 2 or 3 months to arrive at the music store. The quality of this drum is as good as my 1970 supraphonic(no noticeable difference). The sound of this newer drum is excellant. The snare I have with NO serial numbers was included with a Wine silk 11 pc annisversary set sold in 1984. I feel these drums are collectible now( even with the lack of quality precieved by others)and as they age will become even more collectible due( in most part) to the fact of the Ludwig Co.(being sold) transformation to Monroe NC( but I think only for these 2 yrs. before the move) Even if the quality may not be consistant with earlier ludwigs. Do you think one of us has a Supra with a replacement throw off? Or, is the Ludwig book wrong?
