WFLs dropped off at my doorlike a baby in a basket

I posted this on DFO as well but maybe some of you guys don't go there. I would love to hear opinions on what you would offer for these. I want to be fair but I don't want to pay retail.

This isn't mint, or unmolested. These were tools used for years by a working drummer, and maintained through the years as well. There are extra holes for added hardware, missing rubber parts, etc...

20" bass, twin 9x13's, 16x16 floor....and 5-1/2x14 snare. Then of course all the stands including WFL hi-hat and Speed King pedal. Oh yeah...there are also these really yummy bendy transition stamp paper thin crashes, and an old K 15 that he used as his top hi-hat cymbal. These guys are the really thin ones where you can see the stamp on the underside. I guess the only negative is that the owner kept them polished. The cymbals are 15" hats (one K and one Zilco), 3x 17" crashes (2 paper thin transition stamp A's, 1 newer A custom). These tins are ones that live up to the fantasy descriptions I see on Ebay. I got tingles, literally, when I crashed into that 15" K.

I got a call this afternoon from a guy who got my name from the local music store (free plug for Music Shoppe of Normal). This fellow's father was a weekend warrior from the late 1940's until just a couple years ago when he suffered a major stroke. The son just brought them by an hour ago so and left them saying he was told he could trust me and he wanted for me to research these and give an offer.

Just looking at the drums got me liking the old guy immediately. The snare batter is blackened from brush strokes. He did a homemade install of a toe stop on the WFL Speedking, the bearing caps and linkage have been replaced (ie: maintenance). He stored all his cymbals in the tops of the fiber cases by installing a bolt through the center and used fur (real...rabbit I think) for dividers between the cymbals. One of the coolest things was in the hardware case I found a notebook he kept full of off color jokes to be told from the bandstand....it's not PC (ie; funny). Also in there were set lists, newspaper clippings, NOS 1980's Pro-Mark 7a's, brushes, and some vintage (50's-60's) drum keys.

It got me thinking about how some day some guy like me will be going through my stuff and seeing items that held some significance to me or are indicative of something about me. This is the 1st time I have been looking at a score where I feel like I might want to keep them and use them. These aren't museum pieces, these are tools used by a normal guy whose passion was being on that bandstand. I am that guy as are many of you. I won't be on the cover of MD or be called in for a session in Nashville or LA. No one is going to buy a DVD of me teaching poly-paradiddle-ratamaque-double bass fills. But when I am on the bandstand I am in my element. I am a drummer first and foremost. It just doen't pay the bills for me.

I really have no idea what to offer. I don't need another kit. But there's just too much cool mojo going on here.

ALSO!!! Does anyone have an idea what brand/type of tom mount is shown right above the Ludwig mount?

These are very cool and have a great story. I really have no idea on value but that other tom mount looks Premier. Good luck with these I hope you can get them for a fair price. And keep them~! Those nice thin 17" A's are sweet!

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Thanks for sharing this great story. What you have in front of you is priceless to the owner and his family. The news paper clippings and set lists tell this kits journey. It answers the question many on this forum wonder, "Where has this drum been and what has it played?".

As far as value, this is a tough question. You could go the extreme route and say it's got extra holes and it's missing (fill in the blank) or you can value each piece. My vote is to price each piece or groupings of pieces. If I were purchasing, I'd offer the set lists and personal items back to the family after making copies to keep. Remember these WFL's are the quality built "Ludwig" drums that are in demand and they look like Gold Sparkle too. I'm guessing one of the toms was purchased as an add-on. The extra mount look like a 60's Premier.

Imagine the owner of this kit working year after year with these drums. Probably for pennies after expenses/travel. Now he has the opportunity to get a decent "bonus check". Sorry if this sounds like a guilt trip, it's not meant to be. But this is not your average Craig's list drum for sale vintage drum find.

Please let us know what you decide to do.

What a great story. There's a lot going on with those shells that will impact the value. The blotchy-ness on the bass drum appears to be from pinholes in the wrap that have allowed moisture to get between it and the shell. As far as I know, this can not be repaired. I generally don't buy drums with extra holes. That said, if this set was presented to me under the same circumstances, I would offer in the range of $500 to $800. A seller like this will appreciate your knowledge and be willing to part with them for less than otherwise. I have seen it happen many many times. Twice, I bought sets from sellers who inherited them and had no idea that they were great gems. In both cases, they called me later to offer more stuff (free) that they found sitting in the basement. Once, a family came to watch me play their father's old Ludwig set.

Thanks for the coments so far. This isn't an average find. I'm not looking to make max profit on these. I'm far more interested in keeping these drums working. Fact is I want to put together a small combo to specifically play at the retirement/care home this gentlman is now residing at. I would love to play his drums for him. He is the one that told his son to find a buyer for them so I would like to show him they are in good (well kinda) hands.

I don't want to lowball on these at all....but the reality is this. I have 4 kids, just had an ER visit and numerous tests, vet bills, and we are having an 8 ft privacy fence installed....so it's not like I'm swimming in money. But I do have a few kits I could sell (ouch) to get the cash and make some room. Oh yeah...I also have a wife who is "fairly" tolerant but still doesn't understand why a 5 pc kit needs so many drums and really doesn't see the sense in our home looking like a drum shop. Nice problems to have, I'd be embarrassed to share this dilemma with my sister who is a missionary to prostitutes in Mexico...she would slap me.

The gig at the retirement home is a brilliant idea and very charitable of you.. I'd be making that the first priority.. and deal with the future of that great kit afterwards..

Good Karma happening here..

Cheers

I believe Glenn is right. The tom arm mount does appear to be Premier. Here's the one on the '60s Premier drums I picked up a couple days ago.
