Are you going to paint, stain, or wrap it? Rewraping a drum doesnt require near as much preparation. Painting takes more prep and staining takes much more prep.

Well its lead paint and flaking a lot. I have a almost 2 yr old who likes to go downstairs and jam with Dad sometimes so I thought I would just get rid of the paint altogether. I don't have a definite plan for what I will do to it yet as far as wrap or paint but I figured I would just get rid of the paint while I have the time to do it.

Ok then, if your going to wrap the drumm you can use 60 grit sandpaper and your done, If you are going to paint the drum you should probably sand the filled areas with 100 grit. When you have all the missing shell pieces filled in sand those areas. I use a 1/4 sheet vibrating sander. A sander leaves the surface much smoother than hand sanding. After you sand all the repaired areas i'd sand the whole drum with 220 grit. When you think it is all smooth enough, get a good spray primer and spray the shell. Get a tack rag and wipe the shell with it before you prime it. Tape over the holes on the inside of the shell to keep over spray from getting into the shells. There will be imperfections that you didnt see after you prime it. Fill in these inperfections and prime it again. Then you might wanna take it to a professional painter. if you want to paint it yourself, I would wet sand the primer with 400 grit wet sanding paper. you will then get it as smooth as a baby's butt. Always wipe it with a tack rag before applying any coats of paint. Spray paint is definatly the only way to get a smooth enough finish.

I think I will just get it ready to be wrapped. Should I decide later to paint it I will do the rest then. Once I put the Tightbond in I will just sand that with 60 grit and the rest of the shell?

Will the flaking paint just come off as I sand it?

Tight bond is glue not wood filler. A good wood filler would be elmers. If your going to use a sander just sand it with 100 grit and it should take the paint off. if it is lead based paint you better get a mask or something.

hi again

i certified lead rrp restorer and thats right keep your 2 year old away as only 2 3 grains can cause lead poison the body thinks its copper and it goes straight to the bones so if around the stuff do copper/mineral supplement and the lead will wash out normal, if your going to strip it no dry scraping sanding etc use a water base Back to nature good stuff bag it with lightweight plastic and wait 24 hours reapply start removing, cake walk bag it up dispose of ????
