WFL 5'' snare looks weird to me...

Got a 5'' WFL black diamond pearl snare and the bowtie lugs looked weird

to me. Seems to be more room at the top under the hoop than the

bottom hoop.

My 5 1/2'' WFL is has the separate classic style lugs so I couldn't

compare. But they are spaced evenly on top and bottom.

Is it just me or is this normal?

Could be caused by several different things. First thing I would check is the type of heads on top & bottom...are they the same brand? Remo heads have much deeper collars than any other brand (like Ludwig for example) which will cause the counterhoop to sit lower or closer to the lugs.

A picture is worth a thousand words...if you could post a photo it might help immensely.

It looks the same spacing as this snare listed in the SD gallery:

I'll snap a shot and upload though...

Aquarian on batter ans Evans on snare side.

Badge is centered, so something is weird - guess I have to take

both heads off and measure.

Pretty sweet snare, I think it might be solid mahog. shell too and

stamped 1958.

Yes you need to take off both heads, then you can see the shell completely. your shell is maple, popular, mahogany, plied shell

Nice drum!

From the picture it looks like the spacing is more even on the lugs to the left of the badge; the spacing to the right (closer to the throwoff) looks to be more uneven. If that's the case then it could mean a warped or bent hoop (or both hoops). Have you checked to make sure that the drum heads are evenly tensioned? Brass hoops (and these will be if they're original) are not as robust as steel or die-cast and can be deformed by extremely uneven tensioning.

I would remove both heads, make sure the hoops lay flat (no uneven gaps between the hoop and the flat surface they're resting on), then check the heads and make sure they have properly formed collars, and re-seat them and apply even tension, and check the spacing then. Let us know what you discover.

Looked even closer, just trying not to get to wigged with this new

snare, and I think it's the Evans reso head, it seems way deeper.

Yeah, checked tension and played around with loosening/tightening

and hoops seem fine. Snare seems in mint condition and doesn't

appear to be a rewrap but I won't know for sure until I remove a head -

which I'm going to do right now, was just too busy jammin' it!

Very nice!

Now, I have an Acrolite, I know it is not the same drum. I get that. It is off center. One side is closer than the other to the edge. Could this be a Ludwig trait? Is it that some drum makers do this on some drum lines?

It was the weird Evans 'Snare 300' head. Way depper than a old school

1960's Ludwig snare side I scrounged off my '66 Supra...

Sweet! I'm stoked, glad it was just something simple.
