weirdest vintage set configuration...

Loading...

Hey guys,

So I picked up a vintage kit and a half like two years back... The full kit I restored and I have no idea what brand it is but it sounds absolutely fantastic.

Anyways the other "half" if you will was a 13x9 tom and 20" kick (whitehall tiger eye)

Someone Lame person decided it would be cool to separate the other tom and the snare I guess...?

Anyways one tom isn't of much used to me... So I decided I would convert it into a snare which by estimations should sound pretty sweet. I love the sound a deep snare tuned really high... So a kick and snare that would be useable...

However this morning I stumbled upon $75 worth of goodness on craigslist... tiger eye wrap drums! 14" snare, 20" kick, 16" tom, and 12" tom...

The wrap is the same. Although different lugs, someone stole the badges of the set, and the kick has different mounting screws on the inside.

Anyways I still want to do the unthinkable and convert the 13" into snare being I have the heads and stuff...

So I might end up with a two kick, two snare, and two tom matching set???

(being a live in two states right now having two sets will help (not having to bring shells back and forth)

any ideas on where to find what years the models were made guessing the two sets are diffrent years based on the lugs...?

I would seriously advise you to NOT convert the 13" tom into a snare. Not only will it kill any resale value the drum has (tiger's eye is one of the more desirable MIJ wraps) but I highly doubt that it will give you the snare sound you are after.

I actually bought a 12" MIJ tom that someone had converted to a snare... The sonic results were probably a big reason why that person decided to let it go. And now that drum has snare beds with no easy or cheap way to fix.

You could keep both sets and use the 13 for a 13/16/20/14 rock set up, or sell the 13/20 to offset the cost of the other set.

I agree with cn679. I would add, however, that you could have a sweet double kick kit...20/20/12/13/16/14. That is, if you're into that kinda thing. I'm more into the 4-pc. kit, though, so I'd have to go with cn679's advice. That's my :2Cents:.

Hey Matthias, remember me?

That is SO STRANGE that you are snagging one of these Root Beer (non-metallic) kits up.....as I just got one too. Well, 13,14,24. I am soon acquiring a 16 FT from another guy at DFO and will be converting my 14 into a snare (better than a 13 I understand) and will have a 13,16,24,14sn. I have not even started this project yet, but eventually.....

I hope all is well with your other kit(s). ...and of course your life in general!

my head hurts sometime too. I recommend carefully applying a hammer to the right side... it usually helps... or atleast when I wake up I don't remember why my head originally hurt that is...

I realize cutting a snare bed will kill resale value, but to be honest I probably won't sell the kit.

The reason I had wanted to originally was since I only had a kick and that drum. I hadn't seen any floor toms around and didn't think I would.

I realize it would probably sound pretty different that was the idea though. Mainly for recording purposes. I am in process of making an album and the more snare sounds I can achieve the better...

I guess I will see on that one... so don't worry I am not cutting into anything any time soon.

I also am a huge 4 piece fan, but a big kit could be fun...

@John

yes I remember you :-) all is indeed well
