Weird tom issue - Any thoughts.

Loading...

Well I spent some time last night futzing round with the tom and I think it's a lost cause. I dug up some thick rubber washers from the parts bin and used them between the plates/shell. No dice. I think that since the Kent shells are so thin, any amount of pressure against the shell is going to dampen the thing. And with 4 points of contact, it's not looking good.

I also noticed that the drum chokes easily if I tighten the snare stand claw, even just a little. Me thinks the rims might need to go as well.

I hate to say it, but the other Kent mounting system is better, at least in that it doesn't choke the drum to death. I *could* keep an eye out on the 'Bay for the post style Kent setup, but I really don't like drilling giant holes in vintage drum shells.

I have a modern kit with the RIMS style mounts so I may try borrowing the mount off the 12" and try it on the Kent. I guess if it works, then that's what I should do, as much as I dislike the look.

It is the sound after all, which is most important.

p.s. On a side note... X-mas came early today. I got my 16" X 16" champagne sparkle Kent floor tom today. It's an almost perfect match, colorwise and is in great shape. So now the conundrum... do I keep the SlingerLeedy 16" X 16" I've been using with the kit, as well as the Kent, or sell it????

hmmm..... I always did like the Buddy/Gene two floor tom look :)

Did you get to try your steel tubing isolation idea?

Not a Guru... just interested..

Nope - May still try it, but I need the kit for a gig this weekend, so for now, it's on the stand. I will try several other ideas and report back. If I can cure the issue, it will likely help others who suffer the thud!!

Do you really need to tighten the snare stand cradle? Is there not enough heft to the drum that she sits firm on the rubber arms and doesn't move around? I know with my Sonor's the 13" tom doesn't move and its just sits loosely in the cradle. You probably already tried it, but just one more small idea.

Hey there Drum Dad! No, I don't need to sock it down tight, I just happened to notice this phenomenon when I first set the tom on the stand, and tightened it up so the cradle was just touching the hoop.

I backed off a bit and the drum opened up again.

I never tighten the cradle up tight on snares either. It can choke them as well or worse, warp the hoop.

RIMS will cure the issue, but maybe for a more streamlined look you might check out Pearl's OPTIMOUNTS.

The mount on one side of the drum and will accept pretty much any mount you want to put on them. They don't go around the drum like RIMS do, they go between just two lugs on one side of the drum

I use both RIMS and Optimounts, and the Optimounts are a bit less obtrusive to look at and work equally as well, some might even say BETTER than the RIMS mounts.

This one has a Pearl mount on it but you can put anything you like in it's place.
