and we're talking Ambassador vs Ambassador Vintage and how these relate to the original film sizes? Are you asking about a head which is no longer in production Dan? Or just current offerings?

I think there must be a film difference. From what I have read, the Weatherking may be a single play about 7.5 mils and the Ambassador coated may have an additional layer of about 1.5. But this is the first time I noticed a difference because both are available on line. Commercially speaking, that would be redundant (and a waste of $$) if there wasn't a difference.

Looking at that article Zenstat, it might be 7.5 plus 3. But they say the Ambassador Vintage is 10 ply. I tried those and did not like them as well as what I thought was the normal Ambassador Coated. So I'm less that clear what each represents. I think it's the Ambassador coated that I was used to using, but now I see there may be a difference between that and the Weatherking. Given the cost of heads these days, I'd like not to waste $$ by experimentation.

On the Remo Classic Ambassador heads, the "Weather King" is a nod to the old logo & advertising that weather/humidity didn't affect the mylar heads like the calf (or "flesh") heads.

The Ambassadors batters are all 10-mil single-ply heads across the product line (snare side are 3-mil single-ply). The collar (aka "flesh hoop") on the Classic is slightly narrower to accommodate the earlier shell designs with overlapping plies and covering compared to the Standard Ambassador (see the attached image).

Ultimately the films are identical across all Ambassador batter heads, so I'm surprised you're hearing any difference in sound.

Hoppy gave a good explanation! It's really just a change in marketing. Remo simply dropped the "Weather King" stamp. No difference in the head, though. There are still hundreds of NOS heads out there that have the Weather King stamp.

Here's a picture of one of my Remo "Weather King" boxes. It currently holds a NOS Rogers Ambassador coated head. Check out the line that reads...

"UNAFFECTED BY ANY WEATHER - THE GREATEST ADVANCE IN DRUMS SINCE THE INVENTION OF THE STICK"

Again, it was just marketing. Remo has changed their logo stamp so many times, but now has chosen to eliminate the "WeatherKing" portion, as it's been around so long and just a given.
