Weaker chik on worn hi-hats?

Just curious what is your experience with really used old hi-hats that have grooves near the edges smoothed out as a result of a long use.

Do you feel like you get a weaker, less defined, quieter chik from them?

I have a 70s Paiste 2oo2 medium hi-hat pair and I feel like it might be the case, but maybe it's just how I position the - and they're not very heavy cymbals after all.

I have noticed that myself with my two pairs of A Zildjians. I guess it's part of the "mellowing " process as they get older. As the edges get more polished and worn down, they create more of an airlock, which softens the chick sound.

I never never seen cymbals physically worn down smooth over time. Some wear perhaps, but not anything extreme. Older hats from the 40s and 50s tended to be thinner to start with and were not matched pairs with a much heavier bottom cymbal as the concept didn't exist at that time My two pair of early '50s hats have a softer chic as a result of that, which is consistent with the sound I would expect from that period. Metal being hit hard often over a long number of years may begin to fatigue a bit. Maybe that's the change in sound you are hearing.

I've got/had some heavy 50's Avedis hats that were completely smooth at contact point. So much so that they resembled flanged cymbals at first glance. Still sounded great though.
