Wow. I just searched for "Come Together" and saw a smattering of players covering that song on drums. What is interesting is the fact that we have a generation of people with no fear when it comes to the exhibition of their playing. In that selection of videos, I saw good, bad, so-so, and frankly bizarre. I also saw the most boring of teaching videos for that song, as well. One that stood out was a kid who played it decently, but his singing along was pretty bad. I was amazed that there were positive comments on the bad players that almost outnumbered the negative ones. And while I will publicly berate someone who tries to oversell a rattle-bombed drum kit on Craigslist, I will NEVER criticise a kid trying to be a drummer (or any other musician for that matter).

I also heard the isolated track, which showed the greatness in Ringo's simple playing. I also realise that I tried making the drum part too complicated when I used to play the song in other bands. Ringo really exemplifies what I used to teach students: if in doubt, underplay, keep good time, and don't show off. Driving the band and keeping it cohesive is MUCH more important than showing the world you know your flam paradiddles and that your Moeller technique is better than the last drummer's.

I would like to know your observations about people covering the drum parts of popular songs on youtube. Post links if there's one in particular you'd like to discuss.

i came across a guy that goes by the name of vadrum. he's worth a watch.

also a dude called jimmy kadesch - very good indeed.

and seeing as bunny has mentioned "come together", i'd like to point people in the direction zakk wyldes' band pride&glory, who covered it on the extra disc of their one and only album.

he did it with no guitar - just piano, bass and drums. it's a great cover.

also, zakk wylde did a cover of "a whiter shade of pale", on his solo album called "book of shadows", again, a great version of it.

Drums are loud....So play them LOUD!!!

I like to watch them to learn some parts that are hard to make out from my failing hearing. I will try to view a few to get a consensus of the part. Some guys will just play along and others will play exactly what the original drummer played. I like to learn what the original drummer played even though I may not have the chops for a particular part. Overall i think it's a great learning tool for me. . . .james

I agree with that 100%. And the value of watching other play is endless; if nothing else, you see that you're not nearly as bad of a player as you thought you were!!!

Funny, when you mention "Come Together", I immediately think of Aerosmith's "Live Bootleg" version (I mean, Beatles first, naturally, but I always gravitate to the rough/raw emotion of the latter - sorry Beatlers).

Anywho, I looked for a video of Aerosmith playing this song back then, but didn't see any on youtube (not that you need to see a video to appreciate what Joey Kramer is doing). I think this particular version has such a great groove. No real flashy junk, just a fat groove - I think it slides just a little further back from Ringo's. You can listen on youtube, if nothing else.

Anyway, I love watching other drummers, drum - who doesn't. I find I can glean something from most any drummer and love watching the videos. Maybe I went sideways on this thread? I don't knnow. It's hot and humid here.

Thanks for the recall, B-Man.

Bill,

Aerosmith does "Come Together" justice. So did Ike and Tina Turner in their own unique ways. John sings it kinda like a stoner, while Steven Tyler and Tina Turner go for more of a sexual feel.

This is one of the few cases where I am not screaming when I hear other artists covering a song, mainly 'cos the artists I mention covering "Come Together" were great.

Wherever a thread goes (unless it becomes political or an insult match) is fine with me- it's all part of the discussion.
