Warehouse find - 1970s kit new in box

Crazy story, check this out. Just wanting to see if the community on here can help me out. I just bought a vintage Japanese jr. drum kit today and I thought I'd run this by you all.

Back story - I have an ad on Craigslist where I'm looking for a local set in Lexington, KY. Well, this guy calls me today and says, I have a warehouse in Lexington and I found an old drum set in a big box, I've owned the warehouse since 1966 and I have no clue where this came from. So, needless to say, I got in my car and headed straight down there. When I arrived he took me back in the warehouse where he had the big box pulled aside. I opened the box and found a brand new Magnum Deluxe Jr. Drum Kit, Japanese made obviously. It has a silver metal flake finish and it's all there; heads, hardware, cymbal, tom, kick drum, pedal, sticks, etc. All wrapped in the original paper and packing materials.

The shipping label says it came from 20th Century Music in Chicago and it was shipped to 8th Note Music in Winchester, KY. The shipping label is dated Jul 14 1975.

After haggling for a few minutes I bought the set for $115 and loaded it in my car. My question to the forum is this, what do you think this thing is worth?

Very cool story. Wish I could tell you what its worth, are going to sell it? I think you will need more drum pics for the "experts" to give you a number. Ive never heard of those drums but please post some more pics and make them bigger if you can. And how dothey sound?

Thanks, Jeff C. I haven't put them together. I just inventoried the box and put them back. With the heads being over 37 years old I doubt they'll play long before crapping out. However, I could be wrong.

There's a vintage drum website where I was able to find the same Magnum Deluxe logo that's on my drums so it's a known set even if little-known.

I do plan to sell them to someone who'll use them once I can get an idea of value. I just bought them on a whim because the story was cool and the set was untouched for so long. They have a cool vintage look too. The shells look to be pressed, not maple or grain wood. Typical lower end Japanese construction. Could be they turn out to be a cheap $150-200 kids set, just an old kids set. But for the money I figured I can't go wrong and they'll end up with someone who likes them, better than in a warehouse.

I'd post better pics but my iphone makes them so large it's hard to get better pics because of the file size limit on this forum for jpg. and .jpeg. Any suggestions?

Thanks, drummerfish. I'll try to post better pics if I can navigate these file size limits.

It's always really cool to find a time capsule. That's what you've got . MIJ is MIJ. They arrived at a certain point in time to fill a gap, like all marketable things do.This one apparently didn't fill a gap. Does the fact that they are mint and 37 years old ,fill a gap or increase their value? If it's a 3 piece kit, you paid what it is worth---maybe a little less. Perhaps there is a museum that would like them. There is a Museum of Failed Products in Ann Arbor ,MIchigan. ----but certainly they must have MIJ drums there already?

I'd say you're right, Calfskin. The story is cool but it's probably just an old kid's set, new-old-stock no matter how you slice it. But, it'll be on Craigslist shortly so we'll see if anyone steps forward. I'll bet my future buyer will be someone who had a set similar to this in the 70's and they're purchasing for nostalgia. Time will tell....

Yeah, Oddball. That or a former employee there hid a Christmas present for their kid and then died or something. Not sure why anyone would purchase a drum set and then let it sit idle for over 30 years... ???

But hey, that's what I do with my exercise equipment so what do I know? :)
