Voss/Tromsa Bongos 1950's

Loading...

(Voss/Tromsa Bongos made in West Germany). Last May I found these in a degraded state, & shelved them on my refurbishing waiting list. This week I finally completed the restoration. Apart from the fun & satisfaction of doing a project, they are nothing really special. Like many drum companies, their bongos don't seemed to be aimed at serious players, but designed for schools & beginners. One item of interest was the construction of their lugs. They are visually appealing & have an excellent chrome plating, which cleaned up easily. The steel hoops were cheaply plated & showed lots of rust & peeling. The black/gold particle wrap held it's integrity & cleaned up very well.

The Voss/ Tromsa lugs had a simple hardware nut held in place by some sponge. The sponge had long since degraded into powder, so I used pieces of piano felt instead. Reassembling the drums was tricky, because the oversized nut compartment allowed the nut to move around, & it did not stay in a horizontal plain in order to receive the tension rod.

nice work. those turned out really good. i like that wrap. neat how they wrapped the center part between the drums as well.

i ran into the same situation when i refurned a mid 60's sonor snare a year or two ago. the foam stuff or whatever it was had just crumled.

thanks for sharing those..

I don't know who Voss was but I have seen the brand occasionally on some Tromsa made drums. Tromsa , clearly , did production runs for other companies. The construction particulars of these drums are pretty much standard to the era for Bongos----not really treated as serious drums by any company outside of latin American companies. Tromsa did do pro stuff, these not necessarily being representative of their best effort. They are ( along with others ) not well known by an insular culture , like the U.S.
