Virgin Superstar BD 24"

Loading...

I had promised myself, no more drums for a while, I've already spent too much - but I couldn't resist this... :)

Tama Superstar bass drum 24"x14" undrilled - no tom mount, no holes or mods of any kind. A lug is missing (though the T-rod is there) and someone fitted a Pearl lug there, thank God without making any extra holes (he just used one of the two screws to fit it). My seller says it's a 1982 drum, haven't verified it yet, but I definitely want to find out more. So far I've only heard about those kits...

Here's some quick pics of it, more to come later on when I finally get my hands on it :) I really hope something can be done about those scratches.

All excited :)

Yes, these are Japanese birch, the finish is indeed called Super Maple (or Honey Maple for some people?). I thought I'd change the finish to Wine Red (I've seen it on Superstar wooden snares and I love it), but now I'm not so sure...

I had a brief look at the catalogs yesterday and I found this model in 1981, but with a tom mount. I'm not sure whether this is standard configuration or a special order - I really have very little time at the moment, so I haven't looked closely. The interior of the drum is in even better condition than the outside, not even a spec of dust. The bearing edges are fine, except for a slight ding on the reso side. One of the previous owners put a double sticker right behind the edges on both sides - most probably to keep a pillow in place - so I need to find a way to remove the residue without damaging the shell.

More photos coming soon.

A nice find! Looking at the spur mount it does look like an early 80's model. In the 1981 catalog it shows a different spur mount. A rare find without the tom mount.

You mean the rubber tip, in 1981 it looks rounder. Yes, this particular spur features in Superstar and Royalstar models as early as 1980, so it may be as old as that - or my seller is correct about 1982 and this model came out with these spurs. I'll have a look at the Tama forum, in case the serial no. can be dated.

I meant the mount itself actually, it has a pointy shape where the '81 models have a step-like shape on top and the spurs are thicker.
