for that price(and i am sure he might go lower) just take the whole thing!! you can always rewrap the other snare in the future?? cant have enough snares..lol.If i had the space, and if my wife would not kill me for bringing home another drum set!! that would be sitting in my basement right now with me figuring out how to get the money to buy new heads...lol.You dont know how hard it was for me not to buy this kit!! especially with the 14x14 floor tom and the jazz sizes!!! i feel like theres a monkey on my back.....lol

I spoke with the guy today and he told me these are in great condition but they do not have the small blue badge which was a very decent line of Gretsch looka likes with cast hoops,re rings etc.The other line was a pretty flimsy luan kit like a lot of the others.Still for 150 it would be a perfect low volume jazzy type kit,and if i was any where near NY they would be in my basement by now....If one of you New Yawkers want to pick this up for me,i,ll gladly pay you for your time, and we can work out the shipping laterx-mas3

That is a nice little snare Kev. Is it 1,3 or multi ply?

Thanks Jonni

Looks to be 3-ply.... luan-something-luan

Anyone know what the "something is"?

Would it be the same as the re-rings?

Hmmm actually, the outer plies appear to be a light coloured luan and the inner a reddish luan?

Does that sound right?

Are there different colours of luan, or would it be another type of luan (species, sub-species, flora, How 'bout you Fauna?.... you-wanna? )

Thoughts?

I would not be surprised to find it is a low grade of asian maple, or maybe beech, it is lighter than the others. The mid ply is definatley mahogany. My understanding and experience with these re-rings is a soft maple. It is easy enough to shape with sandpaper, but tough as hard maple for rim shots. Mine looks just like that inside and is red sparkle pearl wrap. That is the one I think I will put with the 3 pc WMP. I need to find a good, aged slice of wrap for the rewrap to match them. How yellowed is the no-names?

I haven't taken them outside to check with natural light, but in incandescent lighting they appear a very light lemony colour.

About the plies on the Zim Gar, the outer plies may be beech?

Thanks

Who knows? It's more or less mental diarrhea. Those guys used whatever trees they could find, and since it is a fast growing species, it could be. Also, there are types of maple that are like a weed, silver maple is one, gum maple another and many hundreds of trees grow from the same host, kind of like a tuber. Nothing would surprise me. It could be something we have never heard of as well.
