vintage Zildjian ?

Loading...

OK, I've always considered myself a semi-expert on vintage Zildjians but I need some advice on this one. I just acquired a 15" Zildjian cymbal that weighs-in at 905g. Looking on the bottom its obvious it was used as a HH but isnt the weight kinda thin for a HH cymbal? It only weighs 55g more than my K Custom Dark Crash of the same size. What do y'all think about it?

It could be that one of the previous owners paired it with another cymbal for a hi hat. I suppose it could be a decent top even though it's light. Or, a previous owner tried it and thought better of it.

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

A little light perhaps, but the top cymbal on my Bosphorous Hammer hats is around the same wieight. Although it is a 14" it's not paticularly thin and I have a top '50's old A cymbal that's clearly thinner than that. I could see a 15" at around the same weight. Also remember that if its vintage, they were generally not sold in matched pairs, It may have been a 15" that someone just decided to use for hats.

The top cymbal of my early 70s 15" Zildjian hihats is 1172 (bottom is 1314) for comparison. Our 16" late 70s and early 80s medium thin crashes are 1111 and 1137 respectively.

It does seem a little light for a top hihat but then again we had a set of 14" Zildjian hihats that weighed in the same range as my 15" ones (mid to late 70s Rock versus New Beat 1186/1206).

Thanks for all the input. The Zildjian in question is from the late 1930s/early 1940s. gonna get rid of it.The sound is just a little too vintage for what i play.
