Vintage Yamaha Set - what snare?

Hi,

I've been a member here for several years but haven't posted in a long time.

Anyway, I picked up this early 70's Yamaha kit over here in Japan a few months ago. Have been gigging it once in a while and am loving it. The sizes are 8x12/14x14/14x20". Serial number is 7062 on all 3 drums, if that means anything. The inner ply appears to be maple or birch, but the middle plies are luan, I think.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea what kind of snare would have been with the set originally. Would it have been wood or metal? And if anyone has a photo of one so I could see what the lugs and strainer look like, I'd really appreciate it.

Better yet, if anyone has the matching snare and would be willing to part with it, please let me know! Also trying to locate the cymbal L-arm. :)

Anyway, thanks for looking. Ed

Welcome! As you are in Osaka, you might want to hook up with Eric, his username is Osakabop. He has a good, solid knowledge of everything you need, and you may already know him, but try to contact him and see if he can help you out. And he has more dang drums than many drum shops!

Nice kit too! I love the jazz sizes, they just sound so good, and the Yammies, nice!

I know Eric very well. He's the one that prompted me to get back on this forum.

Cool! Since this is a 70s kit, it could have been either a woody, or a chrome snare. Have you checked the forum at Yamaha to see of any of the Yamaha gurus know? Man, there are just so few older Yamaha drums out there that we just don't get a lot of info on them. And since it is the early 70s, my better judgement says COS because that seemed to be the most popular of the era. As for a model #....

What are you playing now with it?

Greetings...I have the same set only BOP,same sizes, plys etc.Mine came with a COS snare, but all my drums including the snare have the same serial #,s.!.It does,nt have to be a Yam cym arm to fit, almost any of them seem to fit. There are wood snares that match but i have only seen one that matches mine and they wanted 400 for it.TOO MUCH.If you care to send me a pm i,d love to know what they are worth over there.Even here they command better than average prices of the general MIJ GEAR.I love the black though,it looks very Gretschy.

Hi all and thanks for the replies. Currently, I'm playing several snares with it depending on my mood and the gig at hand. Mostly I've been using a Ludwig Acro but occasionally a Gretsch COB or a 6.5x14 Maple drum that I built myself.

Hey Wayne, could you possibly post a pic of your snare? I'd just like to get an idea of what I'm looking for. What lugs, strainer, etc.

And I'm aware that other brands of L-arms would work, but I think it would be cool to find the original one. In fact, I had a MIJ L-arm from my first ever kit which I sold on ebay around Christmastime as I wasn't using it. Then this came along and all of a sudden I need it again. The local drum shop here sells the Gibralter type but it's almost a hundred bucks and I'm having a hard time justifying buying it.

To answer your query regarding price, this kit set me back a bit less than 40000yen, which is currently about $420 USD. Worth every penny.
