Vintage Temple Blocks

Loading...

I'm considering purchasing a set of 5 vintage temple blocks in their original red, gold & black paint scheme. I believe that they're Leedy's, although there are no markings on any of them. They're in their original state, with no attempts made to "recondition" them nor touch up the paint in any way. They're in fairly rough shape cosmetically, although functionally they're fine.

I'm considering adding these to my 1940s Leedy "project."

Here's the questions I'm hoping you can help me with:

1. Should I consider any paint restoration on these?

2. Would painting over the worn areas negatively affect the sound of the respective block in any way?

3. Any idea of the value of a set like this?

THANKS in advance for your time and input!

From what I have read about these is that with Leedy, they came unfinished and at the factory they finished and pitch matched them...

I remember reading it in an old catalog...

So, I think unless they are really in poor condition, I would try and finish match them and restore, rather then strip down and repaint..

Well, I picked up the blocks. I've asked the Web Master if he'd be kind enough to post a few pics of them. I haven't had the time to clean these up, as of yet.

I'm still open to suggestions regarding whether or not to "touch them up" or leave them "as is." Functionally, they sound great.

Also, does anyone know what type of mount would be used to go with the two metal "arms" that came with these?

As usual, thanks in advance for the help!

very nice. A+++++++

This guy is obviously only here to advertised his "WoW" things. All his posts are very generic and include that long string of WoW related links.

And he stretches the page.

Anyway I never realized just how desirable those temple blocks were. I was hoping to come across a nice set for me one day but with those prices, I don't know. Super cool blocks Old school, make sure you take extra special care for them.

HAPPY 4th of JULY to all!Yes Sir

I've currently got a nephew of mine serving over in IRAQ, so I hope that we'll all keep these young men and women in our thoughts and prayers while we enjoy the freedoms that we've got here in the goold old U.S. of A.!

MichaelSJ:

THANKS for your input. If you were the current owner of this set of temple blocks would you keep them "as is", or do a little paint job on them? Any advantages/disadvantages either way?

Also, they're mounted on a parallel metal piece that's got two "arms" that fold out (picture window wipers on your vehicle) that either mount directly onto the bass drum or onto some sort of clamp. I need someone to help me out regarding the proper mounting of the "arms." I've asked the WebMaster if he could be so kind as to post a pic of the "arms" so that you'll see what I'm talking about. THANKS AGAIN for your feedback.

Just tossing this out there.....

Maybe the little swing-out arms mount to the outside of a bass drum mounted trap tray..

I noticed a picture of Chick Webb's kit set up that way...

I was trying to find an old catalog page or advertisement that would have some hardware configs... no luck so far.

BTW.. NICE blocks, congrats on that purchase!!

HAPPY 4th of JULY MichaelSJ:THANKS for your input. If you were the current owner of this set of temple blocks would you keep them "as is", or do a little paint job on them? Any advantages/disadvantages either way?

I would keep them as is. Honestly though, it probably would not matter if you touched them up though, like people do with old bass drum hoops that have paint chipped in spots. Only difference is that the blocks were played.

Advantages: Look nicer. (But even if they weren't touched up, would you think any less of them or the kit they are on?)

Disadvantages: History, the wear shows these blocks have been played, and played alot. Used to their full extent while in service. It gives it more character in my opinion, like how others view the yellowing on WMP. Also once they were freshly touched up, you will probably be hesitant from playing on it to keep it "perfect" unlike in its current state you might feel better on playing the already worn down blocks to show them off.

See those holders on the outside edge of the table... that what I was thinking maybe held your blocks...
